One of the most popular questions we get in the parks is about….bears! So today we are going to be talking about the infamous Bear Hill. Many decades ago this area was home to one of Sequoia National Park’ s most popular attractions. A black bear feeding arena. Here visitors could watch a bear tear into a box of doughnuts or lick peanut butter out of a glass milk bottle. Park Rangers hoped this spectacle would attract hundreds of thousands of visitors.
What they did not expect was that bears would severely injure each other in fights over this new source of high fat and carbohydrate loaded foods. Bears also started trying to get food from humans in other areas of the parks. They learned to break into cars and cabins; and even followed hikers down trails.
Break-ins like this do not happen often in modern days. Park Rangers and visitors have worked hard to keep bears wild and away from human food. When we keep bears away from human food we keep our beloved black bears safe.

We know you have what it takes to get to 100-miles. Stay strong and HAVE FUN!
We believe in you!
