From the National Archives Catalog:

In the heart of Giant Forest there stands a single-room cabin named Cattle Cabin. This cabin was erected in the mid-1880s by Hale Tharp, John Jordan, and Ed Fudge to support cattle operations in Giant Forest. It was built to store salt, stockman supplies, and also serve as a shelter during inclement weather.

Sequoia National Park was established in 1890 as the second National Park in the United States; however, people like Hale Tharp (the first white-settler to the area) and others used the forest to graze their livestock during the summer months prior to it being established as a National Park.

Cattle Cabin is an excellent example of the history of this amazing forest prior to it being set aside as a National Park. Learn more about the History and Culture of Sequoia and Kings Canyon and the many people that have helped protect it throughout the years.
