Following the invasion of Normandy, elements of American forces moved into Brittany with the goal of liberating several port cities. In Saint-Malo, the 83rd Division fought a tenacious battle to liberate this picturesque city. War correspondent Lee Miller arrived in Saint-Malo in August 1944. Women typically did not receive assignments on the front lines, but misinformation led to Miller being told that the war was over in that sector.
