| After receiving reinforcements and a new commander in George S. Patton, the Americans of II Corps resumed their offensive in March 1943, advancing to the town of Gafsa as part of a larger Allied push to seize the port of Tunis and destroy the remaining German and Italian forces in North Africa. This time it was the Germans who fell back, with the Americans encountering only light resistance and taking the town of Gafsa on March 17th. Heavy rains slowed the American advance, but that didn’t stop units from the 1st Armored Division from seizing key positions at Sened Station and Maknassy. |
