Mile 143- Roanoke
We're at Mile 143 of our journey up I-81 and just to your south is Roanoke. Roanoke is known as the "Star City of the South" due to the Mill Mountain Star, the world's largest freestanding illuminated man-made star which was constructed in 1949 and sits atop Mill Mountain overlooking the city. Be sure to visit Roanoke in April for the Blue Ridge Marathon, known as "America's Toughest Road Marathon." While you're in town, grab a bite to eat at the Texas Tavern, an iconic local 10-stool diner that hasn't changed a bit since opening in 1930.
