FAQ's

  1. When does the 2021 Virtual Salt Lake City Marathon take place?
April 10 - 25, 2021. You can complete your virtual race at any time during this 16-day period.
  2. Where do I complete my virtual race?
Anywhere! You do not need to complete it in Salt Lake City or even Utah. The beauty of a virtual race is you can complete it wherever you are. The idea is you set a goal and complete your distance in the spirit of Salt Lake City and all that we love about our incredible community.
  3. What distances are offered?
Full marathon (26.2 miles), Half marathon (13.1 miles), 10k (6.2 miles), and 5k (3.1 miles)
  4. What is the distance of the Kids k?
The distance depends on the age of the child. 1k for 9-10-year-olds, 0.5k for 7-8-year-olds, 0.25k for 5-6-year-olds, 500 feet for 3-4-year-olds, and 250 feet for 2 & under.
  5. What activities can I do to complete my race? Do I have to run or walk?
You have multiple ways you can complete your 2021 Virtual Salt Lake City Marathon race including running, walking, cycling, skating, skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, and rowing/paddling. Another perk of a virtual event!
  6. What is included with registration for the 2021 Virtual Salt Lake City Marathon?
A quarter-zip jacket is included with a full or half marathon registration and a short-sleeve tech tee is included with a 10k, 5k, or kids k registration. All event registrants will receive a finisher medal, access to an interactive course experience and tracking app, and a digital finisher certificate.
  7. How can I get my swag?
You have two options. You can attend a social distancing friendly packet pick-up event at Salt Lake Running Company or you can upgrade your registration for $15 to have your packet mailed to your home. The deadline to upgrade to packet mailing is April 7, 2021 at 11:59pm MT.
  8. When and Where are the Packet Pick-Up Events?
The 700 E location of Salt Lake Running Company (2454 S 700 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84106) on Friday, April 16 (10am - 7pm), Saturday, April 17 (10am - 6pm), Friday, April 23 (10m-7pm), and Saturday, April 24 (10am - 1pm). Some restrictions and rescheduling may apply. We are watching the ever-changing status of the virus, availability of the vaccine, and mass gathering restrictions from city, county, and state officials.
  9. Do I need to reserve a spot for packet pick-up?
Yes! All people attending packet pick-up must reserve a time slot at our SLC Marathon Packet Pick-Up Reservations Site
  10. How do I participate in the virtual event?
After you have your swag... Tune in for a special live kick-off broadcast on Saturday, April 10. Next, pick a date, time, and course during the race period (April 10 - 25, 2021) and fire up the RaceJoy app. You'll be treated to a custom and interactive audio experience packed with fun facts about Salt Lake City, the history of our race, the good your participation does for our charity partner (Huntsman Cancer Foundation), and special messages from our partners. Don't forget to wear your bib so your friends and family (and probably some randoms on the street) can cheer you on! Finally, tune back in on April 24 for a special celebration program that will honor our athletes.
  11. How do I use the RaceJoy app?
Check out our RaceJoy page for all the details. The app can be downloaded from your Android or Apple device's app store for free.
  12. Do I have to use the RaceJoy app? Can I use another app like MapMyRun, Strava, etc?
While you'll miss the fun messages and ability for friends, family, and fellow athletes to send you cheers... Yes, you can use whichever app you prefer. Once you are done with your virtual race, you can upload your results manually by entering in the time or uploading a GPX, FIT, or TCD file from your favorite fitness app or device.
  13. Can I use RaceJoy AND my favorite fitness tracker app like Strava?
Yes. You can have both apps running simultaneously. You can even have your music app playing the perfect playlist and all will work well together. PRO TIP: turn off the progress updates on RaceJoy to avoid redundant distance alerts (and maintain your sanity).
  14. How do I record my results?
If you used the RaceJoy app and correctly linked up to your registration profile, you will have a simple one-button push process to submit results. If you don't use RaceJoy or have any trouble, you can still put in your time on our Submit Manual Results page. It's simple and easy.
  15. Can I get a refund for my 2020 registration?
No. As agreed to in the registration process and communicated at the time of the cancellation of the 2020 live event due to the moratorium on all mass gatherings in Salt Lake City, we are unable to offer refunds. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes.
  16. Is it still possible to defer to 2022?
No, sorry. The deadline to defer was January 16, 2021. If you did not take any action related to your 2020 registration, you were automatically moved into the 2021 virtual Salt Lake City Marathon.
  17. I registered in 2020 for the bike tour or 10k skate and deferred to 2021. Why don't I see those events offered for 2021?
Don't worry! Your registration is still safe. Because we are virtual in 2021, we can offer the chance to complete our race distances however you see fit! Bike tour registrants have been moved into the 2021 Marathon event while the 10k skate registrants have been moved to the 2021 10k event. Special results categories for each type of activity will be provided in each distance so you can compare your participation with fellow cyclists or skaters.
  18. Why are you canceling the 2021 live event when other live events are taking place in Salt Lake City and Utah?
We want nothing more than to get back to normal and host a live event. Some events are able to do this because of the location and scope of their events. Current mandates in the state of Utah restrict mass gatherings (special events) in the state of Utah to under 1,000 people. Our event typically sees 8,000+ participants and volunteers along with another 10,000+ spectators. When we combine the scale of our event, the impact of shutting down 26+ miles of streets in downtown Salt Lake City, and the responsibility we feel as event organizers and members of the Salt Lake community to curb the spread of COVID-19 until a vaccine is more widely available together, it is clear that hosting a live format of our event in 2021 is not possible.
  19. When will the 2022 Salt Lake City Marathon take place?
Saturday, April 23, 2022 (pending approvals from the city, county, and state)
  20. What is the Salt Lake Fitness Challenge?
The Salt Lake Fitness Challenge is a separate event from the Salt Lake City Marathon that acts as a training program. Registrants of the challenge will work towards completing 202.1 miles from February 1st through April 9th, 2021. There is a separate fee for the challenge as well as its own swag!
  21. Can I do the Salt Lake Fitness Challenge and the Virtual Salt Lake City Marathon?
Genius! This is how we designed it all to work this year. The idea here is we all have to train anyway to get up to our goal distance for the virtual race. So, you might as well earn swag and props for putting in all those miles, right? You'll be amazed at the way a challenge will anchor you in a healthy lifestyle as we move from a disappointing 2020 to a brighter 2021.
  22. Is there a discount if we sign up for both the Salt Lake Fitness Challenge and the Virtual Salt Lake City Marathon?
You guys...  of course! By committing to both, you'll receive a 15% discount on both events. It's the least we can do to thank you for your support and honor your tenacity and spirit!
  23. How do I participate in the 2021 Run Utah Triple Medal Challenge with the Ogden Marathon and St. George Marathon?
If you are already signed up, follow the tutorial HERE to add the triple medal onto your registration. If you have not yet signed up for the Salt Lake City Marathon, register and select the "Run Utah Triple Medal Challenge" add-on when prompted. Don't forget to get signed up for the other two races.
