AUSTIN'S BACKYARD MARATHON
How Far Will You Go?
"So, the last shall be first, and the first last"

Texas Hill Country Wild
Our event takes place at Turkey Bend LCRA Recreation Area near Lago Vista and Marble Falls, Texas. The course traces a peninsula along the Colorado River, winding through open meadows, wildflower fields, and shaded Hill Country woodland. Expansive views. Rolling terrain. Wildflower invasions in spring. A landscape that earns every mile you put into it.
Join us for Austin's Backyard Marathon & Memorial Day Remembrance Run, a race weekend built around endurance, community, and remembrance. Whether you're chasing the Bronze Ticket, your first marathon, or running to honor someone, you'll find your distance and your reason at Turkey Bend.
The Backyard Ultra Format
Saturday —Last Person Standing Challenge
Austin's Backyard Ultra is a premier, rugged challenge. It’s not just a race against the clock; it’s a race against the Texas Hill Country terrain. Not your average flat backyard. This is an officially sanctioned Backyard Ultra and part of the Texas Backyard Ultra Series. One 4.2-mile loop. One hour to complete it. A new loop starts at the top of every hour. Miss the cutoff, you're out. Last runner remaining wins.
One unified course that all runners follow, through full sun, through dusk, through the long midnight hours, into Sunday's dawn if you make it that far.
The course is anchored by a central start/finish corral located near the park's main camping clusters. This is home base, where crews refuel runners and runners reset between yards. Where the race is won and lost not in the running, but in those few minutes between hours.
Earn every yard. Climb every hour. Austin's Backyard Ultra is a bucket-list event for runners who want to test their true power, not just their flat pacing.
The trail itself is a 4.2-mile out-and-back along the Turkey Bend peninsula with a tight finishing lollipop. Wildflower meadows, lakeside views, and Hill Country woodland in alternating sections. Reflective markers guide runners through the nighttime hours. The course rewards a steady, efficient pace and a calm mind. One more hour at a time.
A backyard ultra is won at the rest chair, not the starting line. Click here to subscribe to our free weekly newsletter, training plans, pacing strategy, and the mental playbook for the bell. Every Wednesday, straight to your inbox.
Sunday — Memorial Day Remembrance Run
The Memorial Day Remembrance Run is a chance to cover ground with purpose. Run in honor of someone. Run, ruck, or walk in their memory. Run because you can, and they cannot. Run the same unified course as the Backyard Ultra athletes. Same trail. Same wildflower-lined Hill Country views. Half the chaos, all of the experience.
Four distances. One course. No clock pressure.
Marathon (26.2 miles): Seven loops total — six 4.2-mile main loops plus one 1-mile finishing loop.
Half Marathon (13.1 miles): Four loops total — three 4.2-mile main loops plus one 1-mile finishing loop.
The 4 Mile March
The 8 Mile March
You'll share the trail with Bronze Ticket hopefuls. Some of them will still be on course when you finish. That's part of the magic of race weekend at Turkey Bend. While the trail may still hold a backyard ultra runner or two, somewhere past hour twenty, still answering the bell, a new group lines up at dawn.
A brief moment of silence and reflection will occur at the start line to honor the purpose of the day.
If you share the trail with a backyard ultra runner, give them room. Cheer for them. They've been out here a long time.

Recommended Gear List for the Austin’s Backyard Ultra Athlete
Lighting Gear
Mandatory for Night Loops
The day-to-night switch happens at 8:00 PM and the sun sets around 8:20 PM. Runners must have all lighting ready before heading out for Yard 14.
| Primary Headlamp
Minimum 200+ lumens recommended for navigating the interior "Spine" trails. |
| Backup Light Source
A secondary headlamp or powerful handheld torch. Phone flashlights are not sufficient for trail safety. |
| Spare Batteries / Charging
Rechargeable? Bring a power bank to your corral space. Disposable? A full spare set is mandatory. |
| ⭐ Rear Red Blinker HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Helps timing staff and fellow runners track positions from behind in the woods. |
Hydration & Cooling
The "Texas May" Protocol
With 70% humidity, sweat won't evaporate efficiently. You need to manage core temperature proactively — not reactively.
| Minimum Carry: 20 oz (≈ 600 ml)
Required on every loop. The loop is 4.167 miles, but the May heat index can make a 50-minute yard feel significantly longer. |
| Electrolytes MANDATORY 4+ YARDS
Sodium and potassium replenishment is critical during the Texas "muggy" season for any runner planning beyond 4 yards. |
| ⭐ Ice Bandanas / Buffs HIGHLY SUGGESTED
Essential for the 11 AM – 5 PM yards. Keeping ice on the carotid arteries is the most effective way to prevent a DNF due to overheating. |
| Reusable Cup
Please bring one to help us reduce waste at the main aid station. |
Footwear & Apparel
| Trail Shoes
Recommended for the Day Loop (Perimeter) due to rocky and root-covered sections. |
| Road / Hybrid Shoes
A great swap option for the Night Loop (Spine) — gives your feet a different pressure-point profile and a mental reset. |
| Anti-Chafe
High humidity creates hot spots fast. Re-apply every 3–4 yards to stay ahead of trouble. |
| ⭐ The "Finish Line" Layer PRO TIP
Keep a lightweight windbreaker or hoodie in your corral. Even on a 70°F night, your core temp will drop fast the moment you stop moving. |

Texas Backyard Ultra Series
On the hour. Every hour.
No finishing clocks. No fixed distances. No head starts. Finish a 4.167-mile loop every hour, on the hour, until only one soloist remains standing, across the most distinct landscapes in the Lone Star State.
Repeat until you can't.
The backyard ultra is the purest test in endurance running. The course never changes. The clock never stops. The race continues until a single runner completes one loop more than everyone else.
One “yard.” Exactly 100 miles every 24 hours, if you survive that long.
The bell rings. You're in the corral or you're out. Whatever time remains is yours to eat, rest, and recover.
There is no finish line, only a last one standing. Everyone else records a DNF, and total yards toward the series crown.
One frontier.
Registration for individual venues opens sequentially. Follow along for each race page launch.
Our spring season opener. Rugged, technical Hill Country terrain designed to test early-season limits.
Race Page & Registration → ⛰️ 1.5x Points Per LoopTexas Hill Country at the edge of summer. An unforgiving late-May sun that challenges the state's most serious endurance runners.
Race Page & Registration →Set deep in the iconic lost pines and sandy loam. The perfect autumn crucible to build your series yardage.
Race Page & Registration →The rules of a backyard ultra are simple: you run 4.167 miles on the hour, every hour, until only one person is left standing. But since The Last Frontier Circuit is a season-long series across three distinct events (Rodeo, Austin's Backyard, and Big Bastrop), we've built a master leaderboard to crown the ultimate series champion: The Last Texan Standing.
Here is exactly how your miles turn into points and how to get your name on the final leaderboard.
To show up on the official Master Circuit Standings at the end of the season, you have to support the community and toe the line. You must record completed yards (loops) at a minimum of two of our three circuit events to qualify for the series championship.
Singly-run events will bank points, but your name won't unlock on the master leaderboard until you hit that second starting corral.
Backyard ultras don't care about your finishing position or your pace, so your score is based entirely on your distance. At Big Bastrop and Austin's Backyard, every single loop you successfully finish before the 60-minute whistle earns you exactly 1 point.
Not all trails are created equal. Because of the terrain, elevation profile, and sheer physical toll of the Rodeo Backyard Ultra, we are weighting this event heavily: every single completed loop at Rodeo is worth 1.5 points.
| Distance | Bastrop / Austin | Rodeo |
|---|---|---|
| 4 loops (16.6 mi) | 4 pts | 6 pts |
| 12 loops (50 mi) | 12 pts | 18 pts |
| 24 loops (100 mi) | 24 pts | 36 pts |
To reward the deep-mileage battles that happen when the field thins out, we throw extra weight to the final two athletes left in the corral:
Bonus points tacked onto your total loop score.
For the runner who completes the second-to-last loop.
Note: these bonuses are flat additions to your final score and are not affected by the Rodeo multiplier.
If you want to win the circuit, you can't just cruise through one event. You need to log massive yards, and you absolutely want to take advantage of the point-heavy playground at Rodeo to launch yourself up the standings before the final summer showdown at Austin!
Be the last one standing in Texas.
