One cannot say they've experienced all the best things in life until they've basked in the solitude of the desert. And what better way to do that, than to run Zion at night!
And, to comply with current COVID-19 guidelines, we've made some pretty big logistical changes. Introducing our newest event format - small group half marathons. Runners will sign up to run their half marathon during a specific time slot. Each time slot is limited to 50 runners. Beginning at 7 PM on Friday, June 5, 2020, a new group will start every hour until 7 am the next morning. The race will resume that evening (June 6) at 7 pm, and will continue through the night until 7 am the next morning.
You will receive a bib and a race shirt before the race. This event will be timed, but due to the nature of the race being spread out over two days, we will not have an official awards ceremony. We will verify, then mail out the age group awards after the event. In addition, because of the quick turnaround of this event taking place in less than a month, we will not have a finisher medal waiting for you at the finish line. However, we will mail one after the event.
Why at night?
There are a few reasons. First, running the event through the night will ensure we're not sharing the trail with the daytime traffic of bikers and hikers. Second, the temperature in southern Utah in the summer is often in the triple digits. Believe me, a Zion race in June will be much more enjoyable at night than during the day. Third, this is going to be a really unique and rewarding experience. Zion at night is something special.
This course is challenging but is not exclusive to experienced runners. This may be a beta event, but keep in mind, this is a trail race, and you'll be running in the dark, so don your headlamp and get ready to run under the full moon in Zion!
