Description
Welcome to the 2nd Annual Bay One Beer Mile - Relay in beautiful Colonial Beach, Virginia (we survived the inaugural shenanigans...mostly)! The authorities have let us have another go at the 1-mile relay run/walk/crawl inspired by the memory of John Lamb to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood, sharing in the love of drinking craft beer, and enjoying life. John was a dedicated Power Red Blood Donor to the American Red Cross, loved beer, but hated running and, like last year, would've loved seeing his fellow beer-lovers suffer through the challenge of the Bay One Beer Mile.
REGISTRATION & PACKAGE PICK-UP
The Bay One Beer Mile-Relay is an "untimed" relay-race being held on March 21, 2026 and will start at 11:00 AM in the parking lot of the Ice House Brewery and Marina https://www.icehousecb.com/, on the waters of Monroe Bay in Colonial Beach, VA. Awards will be presented to the Top-3 teams. Team names/themes/costumes are highly encouraged and there will be a prize awarded to the team with the best team spirit! NEW THIS YEAR: EACH TEAM MUST HAVE A DESIGNATED TEAM CAPTAIN/LEAD WHO WILL CREATE THE TEAM DURING THEIR REGISTRATION BEFORE THE REMAINING TEAM MEMBERS REGISTER.
The event is limited to a total of Twelve 5-person TEAMS and all 60 participants must be 21 years of age to participate. Team members must sign up with their designated team once the team captain has set-up their team at registration. If you wish to participate but do not have a team, tune in to our Facebook page to see if teams are recruiting runners https://www.facebook.com/groups/680360484522554.
There will be only 1 package pickup this year on Saturday, March 21st, from 0900-1030 AM, at Ice House Brewery and Marina 119 Monroe Bay Avenue, Colonial Beach, VA 22443. All new participants will receive an unfilled logo growler at the package pickup. Last year's participants have the option to receive a new unfilled growler or have the opportunity to bring last year's growler to be filled following the race. ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST PRESENT A VALID PHOTO ID DURING PACKAGE PICK-UP!
There will be a "meet & greet" at Ice House on Friday, March 20th after 5:00PM for those of you who want to measure up the competition and start a little smack talk!
After the race, stick around for the award presentations, live music, food-wine-beer for purchase, and all the fun post race activities Ice House Brewery and Marina has to offer!
ROUTE
The event will take place on a .1-mile course around Ice House Brewery's property. The race requires each participant to consume a 10fl oz. beer, followed by a full lap of the course and repeating it. Each team must complete a total of 10 laps (10 beers). Participants must be 21 years old and will be served Ice House Brewery draft beer during the race (nothing too heavy, we promise)!
APPROPRIATE RUNNING/WALKING SHOES ARE MANDITORY DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE ROUTE. No sandals, heels, or unstable footwear will be allowed.
RULES
The beer mile relay is pretty simple, each team member will be required to drink a beer, then run (or walk) two .1 mile-laps in order until the team completes a full mile (10 laps). The team members will run 2-laps each but must do it in the same order to complete the mile. To be sure everyone is on the same playing field, here some rules to follow:
- Each team will be given a “themed” baton that must be passed between runners after their designated laps are completed.
- Competitors must receive their baton before drinking; however, they can walk/move in the drinking area while drinking. All beer must be consumed in the drinking area and the runner must tip the cup over their head to confirm to the judges no alcohol remains, before their next lap begins.
- Beer cups must not be tampered with in any manner. No straws, pouring out, "accidental" spilling, or other aids are allowed that speed up the drinking process.
- Competitors must follow the course as laid out, no shortcuts or modifications.
- The big question: Is hurling or puking grounds for disqualification? Only, “if observed.” Which means if we don’t see it, it didn’t happen.
ELIGIBILITY
Event is open to those 21 years of age and older, subject to verification at the event and we STRONGLY encourage you to bring a designated driver (DD). If your DD is running late that is okay with us, you can hang out with us at registration and volunteer!
BLOOD DONTATIONS
After completing registration, please consider donating to the American Red Cross at: https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation.html/ or register for a local American Red Cross Blood Drive at: https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html. Both links will take you to the American Red Cross's external website and are NOT part of the Bay One Beer Mile Registration Process. Thank you participating in our race and honoring John Lamb's legacy as a POWER RED blood donor.
