Description

This year's Fountainhead Half Marathon and 10K trail running race is planned to be a hybrid event...meaning we will have both an in-person event and a virtual event.  The in-person race is scheduled for Saturday September 26, 2020 and Sunday September 27, 2020, and the virtual race occurs any time between September 19, 2020 and October 4, 2020.

The in-person race has a cap of approximately 150 runners each day (Saturday and Sunday).

The virtual event allows you flexibility on when and where to run the race.  You can run any time between September 19, 2020 and October 4, 2020.  You can run the virtual race at a park near your home, on a treadmill, or even at Fountainhead Park itself...just NOT on the race mornings PLEASE!!  The course will remain marked on Monday September 27th if you want to run the actual marked course for your virtual race.

Our charity partner for this event is Homestretch.  If you are able, please consider making a donation to this amazing organization during registration.

SUMMARY OF COVID PRECAUTIONS FOR IN-PERSON EVENT

The safety and health of all racers and volunteers are of upmost importance.  While all risk cannot be eliminated, the in-person race will have the following mitigations in place.

  • Start times will be staggered from 7am to 9am both Saturday and Sunday.
  • Each runner will have a specific 15 minute start window and 30 minute start window. For example, the first check-in window is 7am to 7:15am and the first start window is 7am to 7:30am. You will have an opportunity to select your start window, but EX2 reserves the right to reassign you if needed.
  • Each check-in group will be 25 people.
  • Groups 10 people (max) will start every 5 minutes. Smaller groups will start if there is not a queue.
  • Check-in is touchless and event will be chip timed.
  • It is expected that each runner arrives and proceeds to check-in ready to run. Portajohns will be available in the start queue while the runner is getting ready to start. We do not want people checking in and going back to your car.
  • Race giveaways (T-shirt and medal) and post-race food and water are grab and go only and pre-packaged. We will have breakfast burritos, but the selection of food will be MUCH smaller than normal.
  • Parking, check-in, start, and finish areas of the event will have ample room for social distancing.
  • Signage will be used to remind people to wear their face coverings and stay socially distanced at all times.
  • Face coverings are required at all times when in check-in, starting, and finish areas.
  • Runners must carry a face covering during event (when running) and use when passing if ample distance is not available on the trail. If a racer doesn't have a face covering, then one will be provided to them during check-in.
  • Aid stations are staffed for safety only - no water will be provided with the exception of one water refill station at about the halfway point on the half marathon course. Athletes are required to carry their own hydration.
  • There is no post-race awards ceremony.
  • Runners are not allowed to stay after the race except to cool down.
  • Spectators are not allowed. Strictly enforced.
  • Ample restrooms (portajohns and park bathrooms) are available to minimize queues. All restrooms will be sanitized once every 2 hours by EX2 staff.
  • Hand sanitizer stations available at check-in, start, and finish.
  • All racers will be required to self-validate that they do not have COVID symptoms or have been exposed to anyone suspected to have COVID for the 14 days leading up to event.

Course Descriptions and Routes

Fountainhead Regional Park is situated along the banks of the Occoquan Reservoir in Western Fairfax County in Northern Virginia. The 10K and half marathon race courses are beautiful and challenging consisting mostly of hiking trails (including the Bull Run Occoquan Trail), horse trails, and old dirt roads. This course is epic! Competitors will run over rocks and roots, through several shallow streams, and up (and down) some quad burning hills.

Note: if you are participating virtually, then you are NOT required to run your race at Fountainhead Regional Park.  The course will be marked on Monday September 28th if you'd like to run the actual course.  See the FAQs page for more information.

10K Course

The 10K course starts near the entrance to the BROT and follows the white trail to an old trail that is used in the Backyard Burn course to the BROT down by the first set of bridges.  From there the course follows the BROT to Wolf Run Shoals.  Soon after crossing over Wolf Run Shoals, the course takes a right up an old road, crosses over a creek, and then go up a big hill to connect back to the BROT.  The course then follows the BROT back to the start and ends heading past the old cemetery.  The distance is about 6.6 miles.

Half Marathon Course

The half marathon course starts near the entrance to the BROT and follows the white trail to an old trail that is used in the Backyard Burn course to the BROT down by the first set of bridges.  From there the course follows the BROT to Wolf Run Shoals.  Soon after crossing over Wolf Run Shoals, the course takes a right up an old road, crosses over a creek, and then go up a big hill to connect back to the BROT.  The course continues north on the BROT, but follows three size trails on the right side before reaching Bull Run Marina.  At Bull Run Marina, the course follows the BROT back south to the start and ends heading past the old cemetery.  The distance is about 13 miles.

MAKE IT SOCIAL WITH A TEAM!

Invite your friends and family to participate in the race and create a team.  Creating a team is super easy either during registration or after you have already registered.  Please note that all team members are required to register and run the full distance of their race (HM or 10K).  See our FAQs for more info on teams.

Awards Ceremony

We will have a virtual awards ceremony on Sunday October 4th for both the in-person and virtual race.  Additional information will be emailed to all registered racers.
