VQ returns on Sunday September 20, 2020 to the Mason Neck Peninsula! In addition to the normal in-person race, we are having an "on your own" course option. See the important information about these events between the two events below.
VQ has challenged, rewarded, and inspired close to 3500 athletes in its 11 year history. VQ is where is all began for EX2! VentureQuest is a sprint adventure race that is held in Fairfax County just 30 minutes south of Washington DC. The terrain is gorgeous and has a truly remote feel for being so close to a major metro area. Racers love the fact that they can compete in a challenging adventure race so close to home. Competitors are tasked with navigating to find a series of checkpoints, all while trekking, biking, and paddling the beautiful areas in and around Pohick Bay Regional Park. The time limit on the course is 5 hours.
Team members must travel together the entire race. VQ is not a relay. That’s part of the fun! You’re team is as fast as your slowest teammate! The best teams will work together and help each other to go fast as a team.
This year's normal race will have staggered start times between 7am and 10am on Sunday September 20th. Each start group will have approximately 30 people and start times will be every 30 minutes. We will be assigning start times based on team size, but you will have the opportunity to request a start time if you want to race along side friends on different teams. Map distribution will occur Saturday (day before the race) in the afternoon between 2pm and 5pm. It's a good idea to get your map, bibs, shirt, etc. the day before, but not required. You will be able to get your maps, etc. the morning of the race.
The "on your own" course can only be completed between Monday September 21st and Sunday September 27th. We will mail you your maps, instructions, and swag. The actual control flags will be on the course and you will have a process of verifying you went to each control. Note: boats will NOT be provided for the "on your own" course. Boats can be rented from the park on Saturday and Sunday only, but you are welcome to use your own boat (SUP, kayak, canoe, etc. are all OK). The paddle section of the course is optional.
Adventure racing is by its nature a socially distanced sport. However, face coverings are required at all times when not racing (e.g., during check-in) and all athletes are required to carry a face covering and put it on when within 10 feet of other racers that are not on their team. Hand sanitizer will be available during check-in and at the portajohns.
