Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue (SSR) was born from the passion to help rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home German Shepherd Dogs, a breed that often gets abandoned due to lack of knowledge on typical GSD behaviors, in addition to the usual dog surrender reasons that lead to 3.3 million dog surrenders each year.
While we have a strong passion to help the GSD breed, we also extend a helping hand to other dogs in need when we have the abilities. We are very passionate in our mission that every dog deserves a chance at life in a good home, no matter where they come from.
Since our start in January 2017, Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue has rescued 2,134 dogs (and counting!), and we still dream to expand and rescue more. Unfortunately, there are always more dogs in need than resources available. This is where you can help! Grab your walking/running shoes and your pup's leash, and get that 3.1 miles in to support the Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue mission!

Ways to Help: Fostering Saves Lives
Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue is a foster-based rescue, meaning we do not have a facility where our dogs are kenneled. We only board dogs when it is an emergency. Without available foster parents, we cannot rescue dogs. We are always seeking foster homes - unfortunately there is never a shortage of dogs in need.
Fostering is one of the most rewarding and life-changing activities you can ever do. To be able to bring dogs into your home, bring them back to health, restore their spirit, and find them loving forever homes is an indescribable feeling. When you foster for SSR, SSR will walk you through all the steps. We provide a list of SSR-approved vets, a list of standard medical treatments for the dogs (that SSR covers!), and stay in touch with you throughout the fostering process.
Becoming a foster is easy. After submitting an application, SSR performs a reference and vet checks, followed by a home visit. Once you are approved as a foster, we help match you with an appropriate dog. We never force a dog on a family, but let the family decide which foster dog is right for them based on what we know from our assessment of the dogs.
