The Bear Trax and Brownie Shuffle was started in 2009 as a way to honor a dear friend, Nancy Sellars, who was killed by a drunk driver while riding her bike. The race not only brought people to the trails she loved at Lapham Peak, but also raised money for a fund established in her name. For the last couple of years, the fund has established scholarships for local high school seniors who demonstrate a passion and prowess for both academics and silent sports (running, cycling, triathlon, nordic skiing, snowshoeing and more). Details about the scholarships are posted online at

Course Description:
All events will be run within Nashotah park this year due to pandemic restrictions currently in place. Please see below for special precautions that are being taken for this race.  The 20K starts at 9:30am and will be run on the wide, rolling ski trails. The Brownie Shuffle 10K and 5K will begin at 10am and will be run on the ski trails also.

Nahotah Park is less than a mile north of Highway 16 on Highway C in Nashotah. It's about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee and 45 minutes east of Madison. Parking will be available near the start/finish area but is limited; carpooling is encouraged. All cars will need a Waukesha county park sticker for entry. One-day passes can be purchased at the entrance. Allow for extra time if you will need to purchase entrance on race day.

Extra Details:
Participants who register by March 31, 2021, are guaranteed a commemorative shirt. Those who sign up after the deadline are not guaranteed a shirt but will receive one as long as supplies last or will be offered a shirt from a previous race.

A free pair of Saucony shoes will be awarded to the overall male and female winners of all three races. Age group awards will also be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each of the following age categories: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, and 80+.

Early Start

Need more than 2.5 hours to complete the course?  We offer an early 9:00 am start time.

This is a wave start. Waves are comprised of 10 runners. We will have 10 rows of 10 cones, spaced 10’ apart. You can self-select which wave you would like to run in by standing next to a cone facing the start line. We suggest faster runners in the earlier waves, and request you do not self-select your wave until ten minutes before the scheduled race start time.

The announcer will release one wave every thirty seconds after the scheduled race start time. Your time will not start until you cross the start line. We encourage each wave of runners to self-distance as you approach the start mats. Once the announcer releases the wave you should start running.

Passing While Racing
The trail is 25 feet wide providing plenty of social spacing. Participants are asked to run single file, on the right side of the trail & spaced 10 feet apart. When passing a slower participant, participants should shout “passing on your left”. The participant will pass, leave six feet, and then merge right.

Once you finish, we ask that you leave the race area. Please do not wait at the finish line for someone to finish.

Face Coverings
Based on our current permits, face coverings are now required at events. Here is how it will work:

Anyone in the “Arena” is required to wear a face covering. The Arena is defined as anywhere other than on the race course. This includes registration, packet pickup, parking areas, finish line, start line, restrooms, beer line, medal line, anywhere near other people. If you are within 10’ of anyone, at any time, a face covering is required.

Once you are on course, face coverings do not need to be worn, provided you are at least 10 feet from another person. At the start, you are spaced 10’ from others - we strongly encourage you to keep that distance. If you need to pass, call out “on your left” and move as far left as you can. Once you have passed a runner and you are at least 10’ in front of them, move back to the right.

We encourage runners to consider using running buffs while running near others.

When you cross the finish line, please move outside of the arena for your cool down. Once your cool down is complete, a face covering is again required.

If we want to keep running in person events together (and we do!), it is imperative that we exceed our permit requirements. Waukesha County is one of the few places in America that is open to in person events. It is up to our running community to prove that we can hold events safely

Parking is available on site. Please follow the park rangers instructions. Do not park in areas designated as no parking or in the dog exercise lots. You will get a ticket! The entrance to the park is short, so please have $6.00 in cash or a season pass when entering. There are four park and ride lots in the area.

You do not need to print it. We will need to scan the QR code on the receipt, though, so please have your email accessible on your mobile device or save a picture of your receipt with the QR code to your device’s image library.
