Description
What Is Ruck Cancer?
Ruck Cancer is a ruck marching event with purpose. Ruck marching is the military term for carrying a ruck sack (backpack) over a specific distance. Ruck marching tests and trains a Soldier's resilience, ensuring they're ready to take on any mission required of them. Ruck cancer brings this resilience to the war against childhood cancer. Our mission is to recognize and support the victims of childhood cancer in West Virginia.
On September 14th, up to ten "Ruck Stars" and relay teams will each march 47 kilometers while carrying childhood cancer support packages. These packages will then be delivered to West Virginia children who are fighting cancer. The distance is symbolic, the marching demonstrates that we are willing to endure hardship with them, and the packages we deliver will provide tangible support to help lighten their burden.
Absolutely nothing can make facing childhood cancer easy. Through Ruck Cancer, we'll help make sure that no West Virginia family has to make this difficult journey alone.
Why 47 Kilometers?
47 children are diagnosed with cancer every day, on average, in the United States. We chose a 47K distance in honor of those 47 kids who will, unfortunately, start their journey against cancer while we're marching. One K = One Kid fighting cancer.
What is in the Support Packages?
We are currently sourcing items for the support packages. Our goal is to include a variety of items to address needs such as: travel and food expenses, hospital activities, emotional support, comfort items, and more. We are seeking donated items from area businesses and cancer-focused non-profit organizations. If you manage a business or non-profit that is able to provide items, please contact us to coordinate.
Get Involved
There are multiple ways to contribute to the Ruck Cancer Mission. Here are four you can do right now:
- Become a Ruck Star! Register for a Solo or Team Mission while space is available (We're limiting entries to just ten). Endure a little hardship to make life for a childhood cancer warrior a little easier. Registration fees cover the cost of operating the event and remaining proceeds go directly to our charity partner, WV Kids Cancer Crusaders.
- Donate Money. 100% of donations go directly to our charity partner, WV Kids Cancer Crusaders. WV Kids Cancer Crusaders is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids with cancer in West Virginia. You can donate to a specific Ruck Star/Team, in honor of someone special, or anonymously.
- Donate Time. Ruck Cancer is an all-volunteer team, and we still have many opportunities available. Please contact us to connect with our volunteer coordinator.
- Spread The Word. A simple share from you means the world to the children we're marching for. If you don't help spread the word, who will?
100% of Proceeds go to WV Kids Cancer Crusaders
Ruck Cancer is entirely volunteer-operated. All proceeds go to WV Kids Cancer Crusaders (WVKCC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WVKCC is a Coalition to Unite and Fight Childhood cancer. They provide direct assistance to children and caregivers affected by childhood cancer in West Virginia. WVKCC also lobbies at state and national levels for improved treatment, access to treatment, and support for Childhood cancer victims. Learn more about WVKCC at https://wvkidscc.org
