Welcome to the 2nd Annual Carolina Reaper Challenge event! We are pleased to bring a new and exciting twist to the full and half distance that will be great for the first time finishers of these events as well as give a new challenge to all the speed demons out there! 

Events

  • Death Pepper 50k starting at 11:40 (12 x 2.62)
  • Carolina Reaper Marathon Starting @ 1:00pm (10 x 2.62)
  • Carolina Reaper Relay Starting @ 1:00pm (10 x 2.62) - 2 to 4 People
  • Ghost Pepper 13.1 and Ruck Challenge Starting @ 4:20pm (5 x 2.62 Continuous)
  • Habanero 2.62 Starting @ 7:00pm (1 x 2.62) 

Cut Off

  • All runners have 40 minutes to complete each 2.62 mile loop
  • At the beginning of each race runners will begin every 40 minutes
  • All laps are started together with the cowbell ring
  • After 5 loops of the Reaper challenge the Ghost/Ruck participants will join
  • On the final lap of the Ghost/Ruck/Reaper the Habenero participants will join
  • If you complete your loop in 20 minutes you will have a 20 minute break
  • If you complete your loop in 39 minutes you will have a 1 minute break

Runner Information and Race Day Questions

Packet Pickup

Packet Pickup will be held Friday at New Balance Store Woodruff between 4pm and 8pm. During packet pickup YOU will check in before you pick up your race bib, and giveaway item (shirt, hat, or socks). At 6pm we will have an opportunity shakeout run of 20 minutes before raffling off some sponsor items and enjoying some beer from Brewery 85. Bibs and swag can then be retrieved prior to the race start at Southside High School one hour prior to each event. 

Giveaway Items

Upstate Ultra will always try to provide quality giveaway items for our runner to commemorate their experience of the race and the course. Various items will be available for selection but if you would like to purchase one specific for the event please use our online store front through the checkout in registration. Various items include tri-blend shirts, socks, hats, stocking caps, stickers, magnets, and race buffs!

Address and Parking

The race is located at Southside High School and runners can park at the following address: Tiger Pride Drive, Greenville, SC 29605. This is on the back side of the main entrance to the school off of Jacobs Road. Please do not access the school through Frontage Road as this gate will be locked. 

Base Camp

We will have plenty of space for personal tents to be set up around the finish line and plenty of space for family members and crew to hang out. We are a pretty laid back event company so we hope you like the chilled out vibes that go along with running when its 100+ degrees!

Ruck Rules

If you are entered in the Ruck division your ruck sack weight needs to be a minimum #15 for Women and #25 for Men. That does not include water or food or clothing/accessories. 

Course Markings

The course will have a series of directional arrows (both yellow and green) that will be placed  at various intersections. Please follow all directional arrows to stay on course. In the event that you make a wrong turn please backtrack to your original spot of confusion. Cutting the course (even if unintentionally will lead to a disqualification)

Carolina Reaper 2.62 Mile Loop - Map TBA

The Carolina Reaper course will be held on a closed road loop within the campus of Southside Highschool with a small section of grass/gravel. 

Timing & Bib

This race is being timed using our chip timing system that will be given to each participant at packet pickup. These small RFID tags must be placed on the outside of the runners right shoe either through the shoelace hole that is provided or using a safety pin. The runner will be responsible for returning the RFID chip after crossing the finish line. Each reusable chip costs $10 so please return or you will not receive a finish result. Please place the bibs on the front of your body so they are visible by our timers upon crossing the finish line.

Cutoff & DNF

All runners who need to stop their race for whatever reason before finishing please return your chip tag to someone at the timing table and indicate that you are pulling out of the event. We allow individuals to drop from one event to another to receive a finishers award to that distance. For example all 50k runners who complete at least a 13 miles (5 laps) can drop to the half marathon event list. No overall awards will be given in the event that you place in the top 3 for the simple reason you did not compete during the half marathon time frame. Thank you. 

Finishers Award

All finishers will receive a finishers patch that is unique to the race and goes along with our 9 event series. At the end of our series runners who complete 5 events will receive our sponsored gear bag that can be used to sew all of your patches on. We will also score age group results that will ultimately be placed inside our "Get Dirty" point series explained below. Also overall awards will be given to the top 3 male and female runners in each open race.

Aid Stations

There is one aid stations on course that will be located at the start/finish of the 2.62 mile loop. The aid station will be fully stocked with tailwind, soda, water, cookies, salt, chips, and crackers. We encourage all runners to bring a dish or aid station food to help contribute to this wonderful event. This is a cup-less event so runners are required to carry a hydration bottle if they will need fluids during the race.

Results

The result kiosk will have a scrolling set of overall results for you to view. Please do not bother our timers who are collecting bib numbers. We will NOT do overall and age group awards at a specific time but simply calculate our top 3 male and female winners on the fly. We will place age group and overall results the night of the event around 9pm. Please be patient.

Point Series

The point series automatically places you in our 9 event competition. The “Get Dirty” series takes a runners top 5 results of the calendar year and places points according to their overall and age group places. At the end of the calendar year we will host an annual party that all runners are welcome to join as we announce our top 3 overall and age group winners for each division and gender!

Admission Fee

There is a no cost to enter the park for runners and spectators. Although there is no admission fee we welcome any donation to the state park directly through the link provided during checkout. 

Entry Referral

Participants who register for this event who refer their friends and running buddies to join the event will receive $5 for every participant that also registers for the event. Please use your personal referral link that will be included in your confirmation email after you register for the event. You can either share this link on your social media page or through a personal email to receive the promotional refund!

Upstate Ultra is partnering with Hilton of Downtown Greenville to offer discounts to all of our race participants on race weekends. We would like to send them a big thank you for working with our runners in hosting them in their beautiful home away from home in lovely downtown Greenville. 

Cancellation Policy & Deferral 

We will give a 48 hour advanced notice of cancellation. In the event of a cancellation you will be given the option to defer your registration to next year with a 2 week window for deferral after the next years event has been scheduled and runners have been notified via email. No unfortunately. We plan ahead by purchasing insurance, food, bibs, patches, awards, shirts, and facility rentals. We will go ahead and donate your entry to our park system. Thank you
