Description

The Stumptown Cross series is back!  Whether you race as an individual or are part of a team, these races are always competitive, and a lot of fun.  If you feel like challenging yourself on some grassy, uneven terrain, then make plans to join us this fall.  These ain't no stinkin' road races!

For 2023 we have a 5-race series lined up:
Sept 30 - Mary S Young 5k (course map)
Oct 14 - Gradin Park 5k (course map)
Oct 28 - Strawberry Island 8k (course map)
Nov 4 - Pier Park 6k/8k (USATF Oregon Association championships) - 6k map, 8k map
Nov 18 - Fernhill 6k/8k (USATF Northwest Region championships) - 6k map, 8k map

Women and men race separately at each venue (except Strawberry Island, which will be a single start at 9am).  Women's races begin at 9:00am, with the men's races beginning at 9:40 (for events where women race 5k) and 9:45 when women race a 6k.  Start times and course maps are available on the Stumptown XC Facebook group.

Cost

  • The cost is $75 for the entire series for non TRL members or $50 for TRL members. Series registration includes registration in all five races.
  • Cost to register for individual races is $25 ($15 for TRL members).

Team Scoring
One of the exciting things about cross country is that results are not only based upon how you place as an individual, but team scores are also calculated for each race. Being on a team is not required, but results are calculated for individuals as well as teams.

For normal Stumptown scoring, the team score is based on the total for the place of the top 4 runners on each team.  If a team had the top 4 runners in a race (placing 1, 2, 3, 4), the team score would be 10.  Unaffiliated runners, or runners on a team that does not have a full scoring squad (so less than 4 runners) at any particular race are not included in the places used to generate the team score. Places used to generate team scores are also tabulated separately for open teams and masters teams (40+, 50+ and 60+) - so if the first 40+ master runner (who is on a full team of 4) places 10th overall in a race, they get a score of 1 in the 40+ masters team scoring, and do not count in the ranking for open runners finishing after them (so the next open runner would get a score of 10 instead of 11). In the event of a team score tie, the score for the 5th place runner is used the break the tie, and the 5th runner is also a "displacer", meaning that their place adds to the score of another team's scoring runner who finishes behind them.

For USATF races, a separate ranking for individuals and teams scores is calculated for USATF members, in addition to normal Stumptown scoring.  To be included in the USATF scoring, individuals registering for a race or the series need to indicate that they are a current USATF member and include their USATF number.  It is up to the individual to ensure this info is added prior to the start of the Stumptown event which will be serving as a USATF championship event.  USATF scoring is similar to Stumptown in that open and masters groups are ranked and scored separately, but the number of individuals needed to score as a team varies.  For open women and men, the number of individuals included in a team score is 5, with up to 8 counting as displacers. For 40+ and 50+ masters men, it is the same 5 score and up to 8 displace as open teams. For 60+ masters men, the team score is based on the top 3 finishers, with up to 5 counting as displacers.  For masters women (40+, 50+, etc), the team score is based on the top 3 finishers, with up to 5 counting as displacers.

Team Scoring

For Open, Masters 40+, and Masters 50+, the top four runners on each team score and any 5th runner is a displacer. If there is a tie, the 5th runner breaks the tie. If there is a tie between two teams that each have 4 runners, the place of the 4th runner breaks the tie.

For Masters 60+ and Masters 70+, only three runners score and the fourth runner is a displacer.

To specify your masters team category, specify “MASTERS 40+” after your team name such as “NAC MASTERS 40+.”
