As a multi-decade endurance athlete, I have faced countless demanding challenges that have tested my skill, will and faith. However, on March 27, 2024, I started the most daunting race of my life. Two things happened that day. First, I was diagnosed with cancer - stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma. Second, I met the person who would save my life, Dr. Nancy Bartlett. As we discussed the situation, Dr. Bartlett took my hand and said through a confident, yet humble smile that we would find a path forward. For the next two years we followed that path with relentless determination and faith, navigating the inevitable headwinds, and obstacles, but never giving up. Together with her team and the support of my wife Kathy and my four children, Caroline, Kevin, Will and Grace, and my many friends who traveled with me, we have achieved a remarkable milestone. July 23, 2026, marks twelve months since my last treatment and one year of remission.
There is another part to this story. Probably the most important part. The final course of action Dr. Bartlett prescribed did not exist when I was first diagnosed. It was merely an idea developed by the doctors and scientists who work tirelessly to find a cure. In December of 2025, she was able to enroll me in a clinical trial. Dr. Bartlett has spent her career along-side many of her colleagues at Siteman Cancer Research Center working to find a path to treat and cure all types of cancer. If not for this work, my journey might have taken a different turn.
My ask is simple. Please join Kathy and me in supporting Pedal the Cause. We will be participating in this fundraising event on September 20, 2026, with a 50-mile remote ride across the barrier Islands just south of Charleston, South Carolina. The money raised by this annual event goes to support the ongoing research at Siteman. We need your support.
