Running to #lightthelighthouse

This year the Beacon of Hope 5k celebrates 15 years supporting teen suicide prevention efforts in Hampton Roads. Every year runners and walkers come together at the Virginia Beach oceanfront for a morning supporting I Need A Lighthouse, Inc. Founder and Executive Director, Kathleen Wakefield says, “Every year I am moved beyond words by the support of this community. You make our efforts - educating teens to prevent teen suicide - possible.”

Ms Wakefield founded Lighthouse after losing her son, Jake, to suicide. Since that time she has traveled throughout Hampton Roads sharing her message - that there is help and hope for teens who may be struggling with depression or contemplating suicide. “Students are so open and willing to listen. Often students come up after a presentation and share that after hearing our presentation they are inspired to get help, or reach out for help for a friend. It reinforces the importance of these conversations.”

Runners and walkers, individuals and teens, come together for a wonderful morning of hope. For the past two years runners have enjoyed an after party hosted by Ocean 27. Every participant leaves with a finisher medal, t-shirt, and the satisfaction of supporting a teens and young adults in Hampton Roads.
