Captain David Gay began his career with the Savannah Police Department in January of 1992. After spending his first four years in the Patrol Division he went onto assignments in the detective's office including assignments in robbery, homicide and the special victims unit. He served as the department’s first special event coordinator, while also overseeing the alcohol beverage compliance unit, outside employment office, and information management. He spent 13 years on SWAT serving in a variety of positions including team training coordinator, and entry team leader. Since being promoted to Captain in 2015 he has led the planning & IT section of the department, special operations and is currently leading the Criminal Investigations Division and Special Investigations Section.
Captain Gay holds state certifications as a field training officer, POST training officer, and firearms instructor and is one of 9 of SPD leaders certified by the International Chiefs of Police to teach their Leadership in Policing Organizations course. He earned his bachelor's in criminal justice from Armstrong Atlantic State University and his Master’s from the University of Louisville. He is a 2017 graduate of the 138th session of the Southern Police Institute’s administrative officers course in Louisville, Kentucky.
