I'm running the TCS NYC Marathon as a member of the Semper Fi & America's Fund Team. 

There's more general information about Semper Fi & America's Fund below the ***, but first I'd like to explain what I'm doing this year with this particular team.

Over the past eleven years, I've raised tens of thousands of dollars for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center through my endurance athletic endeavors.  I've run in honor of many cancer patients, most notably, my dad.  I continue to support MSK and to applaud the great work they do in the fight against cancer.

Most people who know me know that my dad had cancer.  Many also know that my dad served with the US Marine Corps.  Every time I run a marathon or participate in a half or full distance triathlon, I wear my dad's dog tags on a chain around my neck.  I keep the tags inside my sports top, right over my heart. 

My dad was not defined by his time with cancer.  He also wasn't defined by his time with the Marines.  He was, however, defined by a lifetime of helping and supporting those who needed it.  He always did so without fanfare and often with little or no recognition - a lot of what he did for others was unknown to my family and me until his wake and funeral, when people approached us to share the stories of how he changed their lives.  It was powerful and inspirational and quite humbling to hear.

Semper Fi & America's Fund works in a way that aligns to my core values and to those of my dad.  They take the time and invest the resources to understand the people they help, so the help they provide is tailored to the needs of the recipients.  Need is not uniform and help is not one-size-fits-all.  I love that this organization provides nuanced support for the multiple facets of recovery.  They address needs on the physical, mental and emotional level.  That kind of assistance has real meaning.

I'm lucky enough to be healthy this year (knocks on wood) and able to participate in endurance events including (but not limited to) the NYC Marathon.  My focus, though, isn't on the finish times or results.  It's on what I can do *through* the events to encourage people to support this tremendous organization.
