Description

Laufvergnügen
Saturday, October 24, 2026 · Washington, DC
Lauf means run. Vergnügen means pleasure. Put them together and you get a race that ends with bratwurst.

Some races are about your split times. This is not one of them.

Laufvergnügen is a German fun run in the truest sense of both words — a real course, a real clock, real awards for the fast folks, and then an Oktoberfest at the finish line that most people would show up for even if there were no running involved.

Brats. Warm soft pretzels. Handmade mustard that people ask us about for months afterward. Sauerkraut, fresh buns, and a crowd of runners in alpine hats deciding whether to go back for seconds. (They do.)

It's late October in Washington. The weather is finally good. Come run something, then stay a while.

Last year the federal government shut down, and it took our race with it.

We moved everything online, mailed the shirts and medals, honored what we could, and told everyone we'd see them next year.

This is next year. Saturday, October 24, 2026. Same course, same spread, same terrible costumes. We're glad to be back on our feet, and we'd like you there.

THE DISTANCES

Everyone starts and finishes in the same place, and everyone ends up at the same party.

Half Marathon For the ones deep in fall training. A flat, honest 13.1 that won't wreck you and finishes somewhere worth finishing.

10K The sweet spot, and our most popular distance. Long enough to feel like you did something. Short enough that you're hungry rather than destroyed.

5K Bring your family. Bring someone who's never raced. Walk the whole thing if you like — nobody here is going to rush you, and the pretzels don't run out.

The OKTOBERFEST
This is what people actually come back for, so we'll be specific about it.

Every registration includes food. Not a voucher, not a coupon, not a separate line to stand in — you cross the line, you eat.

Bratwurst. The real thing, hot off the grill. Soft pretzels. Warm, salted, plentiful. Handmade mustard. We are not exaggerating about this mustard. Sauerkraut and fresh buns. [Beer / near beer]. [Note: the race runs on National Park Service property, which means near beer rather than the real stuff. We didn't make the rule, but we did make sure there's a lot of it.]

FAQ
How do I say it? Roughly LOWF-fer-gnoo-gen. Nobody is going to correct you, and half our own staff say it differently.

What does it mean? "Running pleasure," literally. In practice, "fun run."

Is this a serious race? It's accurately timed, the course is measured, and there are real awards. It's also a race where people compete in lederhosen. Both of those are true at once, and that's the whole idea.

Can I walk it? Absolutely — especially the 5K. There's no cutoff that will catch a walker.

Is the food really included? Yes. One registration, one plate, no vouchers.

Can spectators come? Please bring them. [Note on whether spectators can purchase food.]

Why isn't there real beer? The race runs on National Park Service land, and NPS doesn't permit alcohol. We bring near beer instead, and a great deal of it.

What if it rains? Late October in DC is usually excellent. If it isn't, dress accordingly — we'll be out there regardless.
