My Dyslexia Journey

After Emily's first grade year we could tell she was learning to read differently than her two older siblings.  We noticed things like her being able to read a word on one page, but on the very next page she was not able to read that same word.  Her standardized test scores showed her below 10% in reading and math.  She was getting increasingly frustrated and it became a struggle at school and home to get her to complete work.  She lost confidence in herself and began to have behavior issues.  Thankfully, her aunt Patti brought to our attention the possibility of dyslexia.  She educated us on what this learning disability looks like in children and how is affects all areas of their life.  The beginning of her 2nd grade year we had her evaluated and it was very clear that she had a severe learning disability.  With Patti's help we were able to navigate how to get her the help she needed.  She was immediately put into an Orton Gillingham program through our school district and since then we have watched her flourish.  Since her diagnosis she has had an amazing support system in her school from her classroom teachers (Thank you Erin, Sarah and JT!) to her special ed teacher (Thank you Sam!) and her Reading specialist teacher (Thank you Becky!).  At the end of her 4th grade year she is now in the 93rd percentile for reading and she reads every single day.  Her confidence is back and her ability to participate in all the subjects has become much easier for her.  These things could not have happened without her teachers and the proper resources.  Please consider donating to this cause as it directly affects so many people who also need this type of help!

Here are Emily's thoughts: "I remember it was really hard to read pages with a lot of text on it.  And I remember that sometimes I would see the letter "e" instead of an "a"  I remember I used to see letters moving around on the page but now that doesn't happen because I think I got more used to reading.  Now it's really easy for me to read, or it has gotten easier.  And I can read pages with smaller text easier and I'm not as frustrated.  I think it helped a lot with my math too because now math is easier for me because I used to turn numbers around all the time.  My teachers have helped me so much.  Please donate!"
