WHY “FLORIDA OUTLAW”?

The Florida Outlaw Ultra gets its name from one of the most infamous chapters in Lake Weir history. In the winter of 1934–35, notorious fugitives Kate “Ma” Barker and her son Fred Barker, members of the Barker-Karpis Gang, hid out in a quiet lakeside home near Ocklawaha on Lake Weir. Their stay ended on January 16, 1935, when federal agents surrounded the house and a prolonged gun battle erupted, killing both Barkers. The historic, bullet-scarred home was later preserved and moved across Lake Weir to Carney Island Recreation & Conservation Area, where it stands today as a reminder of the area’s outlaw past. That history inspired the name Florida Outlaw Ultra—a race built around grit, endurance, and the wild side of Old Florida.

FLORIDA OUTLAW ULTRA

Run Wild. Go Long. Become an Outlaw

Welcome to the Florida Outlaw Ultra, a bold new trail-running experience at Carney Island Recreation & Conservation Area on beautiful Lake Weir in Marion County, Florida.

Built for runners who crave something beyond the ordinary, the Florida Outlaw Ultra combines rugged Old Florida scenery, lakefront views, sandhill terrain, wooded trails, wetlands, and wide-open spaces into one unforgettable endurance challenge.

Whether you’re stepping up to your first trail ultra, testing yourself against the clock, or chasing a new personal best, this is your chance to leave the pavement behind and run free.

NEW LOCATION FOR 2027

The Florida Outlaw Ultra has officially relocated from Wekiwa Springs to Carney Island Recreation & Conservation Area on Lake Weir.

This exciting new venue gives us more room, more scenery, and a fresh course environment while keeping the adventurous spirit runners loved about the Wekiwa Springs Ultra.

Carney Island offers more than 750 acres of protected natural Florida, with sandhill islands, causeways, wetlands, shoreline, wooded terrain, and beaches along Lake Weir. The property also carries a fascinating history stretching back centuries, from Native American settlements and early Florida agriculture to citrus groves, steamboat transportation, and the preservation efforts that ultimately protected this remarkable landscape.

It’s the perfect setting for the next chapter of our ultra.

The loop-course format creates an energetic ultra atmosphere where runners repeatedly return to the main event area for support, encouragement, food, gear changes, and a little motivation before heading back out for another lap.

Run hard. Slow down. Walk when you need to. Eat. Recover. Keep moving.

There’s only one rule that matters:

Don’t quit before you have to.

BECOME AN OUTLAW

You don’t have to be fast.

You don’t have to be an elite ultrarunner.

You just have to be willing to find out what happens when you keep going.

24 Hour Team Relay

Go Far Together.

The Florida Outlaw Ultra 24-Hour Relay is built for runners who want the ultra experience with a team by their side.

Gather a crew of 2–6 runners, build your strategy, and see how many miles your team can cover in 24 hours. You decide how to divide the work, when to switch runners, and how hard to push.

Fast teams can race for the win. Recreational teams can chase a mileage goal. Friends can simply come out for an unforgettable day and night on the trails.

Either way, the challenge is the same:

Keep moving until the clock runs out.

HOW IT WORKS

Teams consist of 2–6 runners who take turns completing approximately 3.1-mile loops.

There is no required rotation and no limit to how many consecutive loops a runner can complete. One runner might knock out a single lap before handing off, while another might stay on course for several loops.

Your team controls the strategy.

Run one loop or run five. Switch frequently or let your strongest runners go long. Adjust your plan as the day turns into night and fatigue begins to change the game.

The race clock runs continuously for the full 24 hours, and every completed loop contributes to your team’s total mileage.

BUILD YOUR OUTLAW CAMP

Between loops, runners can rest, refuel, recover, and cheer on their teammates from the team area.

Teams may bring a support crew to help with hydration, nutrition, gear, and encouragement throughout the event.

Part race. Part campout. Part endurance adventure.

The relay creates an incredible atmosphere as teammates share the highs, lows, laughs, midnight miles, sunrise laps, and everything in between.

WHY RUN THE RELAY?

Share the Challenge
Experience a 24-hour ultra without having to tackle all 24 hours alone.

Create Your Own Strategy
There’s no prescribed rotation. Build the plan that works best for your team—and be ready to change it.

Race Day & Night
Watch the course transform as afternoon becomes sunset, darkness turns to dawn, and the final hours begin to count down.

Chase a Team Goal
Compete for the podium, set a mileage target, or simply see how far your crew can go.

Earn the Finish Together
Every team member receives a finisher medal, with special awards presented to top teams in designated categories.

WHO’S ON YOUR OUTLAW CREW?

Recruit your fastest friend.

Bring the teammate who never quits.

Add the person who keeps everyone laughing at 3:00 AM.

Then come find out just how far you can go together.

One Team. One Clock. 24 Hours. Unlimited Possibilities.
