On June 27, 2019 our daughter, Gabriella, went into Children’s Hospital to get what was thought to be a cyst removed from her index finger. The surgery went very well but a few days later we got the call that told us that the lump was EPITHELIOID SARCOMA. Our first appointment was early July one of our amazing PCS doctors. During this appointment Gabbi didn’t cry or whine about anything she was told which included that she had to have a partial finger amputation. Her only concern was if she would be able to still do Gymnastics! She was happy to hear that she could continue with restriction.
Her surgery was scheduled for August last year after numerous scans. Throughout all this Gabbi maintained her positive outlook. In fact, during her pre-op exams the nurse doing her vitals started a quiet conversation with me. The nurse said, whispering, “Her blood pressure is high... is she nervous? Overhearing this, Gabbi said “Of course I’m nervous I’m about to have my finger cut off!” The whole room started laughing. After the surgery we found out that everything was clean, and margins were good!
The greatest part about this experience is that we learned so much more about our Gabbi! She is the strongest, bravest, most confident 12-year-old we’ve ever met! She remains dedicated to her new love, softball, and kept working hard even with everything that was going on including her schoolwork! She kept a positive attitude and made the best of each situation! She is our hero!
We are so thankful to PCS as this organization gave us a group of individuals that are there for us. We were immediately accepted by the group and instantly treated like family! We couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this great organization. Gabbi’s Crew is here to fight, and we will win this together! Please help us in this fight and give whatever you can so that we can make sure the critical research happening right here in Pittsburgh is always funded!
