Help support the Sean Hughes Character Counts Memorial

Please support me as I raise funds to build a Memorial Plaza and Garden on the campus of Lower Merion High School in honor of the late Dr. Sean Hughes, longtime, adored principal of Lower Merion High School

I plan to participate in the second annual Character Counts 5K, Fun Run which will take place before the Memorial Plaza Groundbreaking at Lower Merion High School on Sunday, November 10, 2024.

Last October, more than 300 runners and walkers participated in the inaugural Character Counts 5K and Fun Run to honor the legacy of late Lower Merion High School Principal Dr. Sean A. Hughes. Thanks to the generous support of participants and sponsors, approximately $25,000 was raised to develop the Sean Hughes Memorial Garden and Plaza on the Lower Merion High School campus in Ardmore, Pa. This year, the second annual event, on November 10, 2024, will culminate in a groundbreaking for that project. But we’re only halfway there!! And, we need your help to finish the project. Any donation amount helps!

BACKGROUND:

The Philadelphia area suddenly and tragically lost Dr. Sean Hughes, longtime, adored principal of Lower Merion High School, on November 13, 2021, in an avoidable car crash.

In addition to his legendary dedication to Lower Merion High School, Dr. Hughes is also remembered for his life-long love of running. Daily for well over a decade, he was seen, often before dawn, running through the streets of Lower Merion and along Montgomery Avenue. He attended Cardinal O'Hara High School where he received awards and accolades for his running achievements, and he continued to run in his free time while at LaSalle University. Dr. Hughes also proudly completed the Broad Street run for more than 20 years and served as a co-chair of the Skippack Lions Club 5K run for a decade.

The Sean Hughes Memorial Fund has already funded a 25-year scholarship, but we’re only at the halfway point ($100,000) for the Garden Project. This new space on the campus of LMHS will provide a unique gathering space on the slope between the old building and new building, including an amphitheater, a vast garden with walkways and seating, and a gateway to campus reflecting both the physical image of Dr. Hughes and the tenets of his oft-stated motto that “Character Counts.”
