Hi, my name is Joseph Federico. Last year, I lost my grandfather to a rare condition caused by an aspergillus mold infection in his brain. He was not only a beloved family member but also an incredible inspiration to me. My experiences with him, from testing water at local beaches to our countless fishing trips, ignited my passion for environmental science from a young age, which I have gone on to pursue in my career.
He was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia, a rare form of cancer, at just 29 years old, he defied the odds and lived with it for 43 years. Sadly, the treatment for his leukemia eventually led to the development of this rare condition. Despite his struggles, he remained a beacon of strength and resilience, a true demonstration of the indomitable human spirit.
In honor of my grandfather's memory and the countless others affected by rare diseases, I've started this fundraising page. I'll be participating in Walt Disney World 10K on January 10th, 2025, dedicating my efforts to raise funds to support research and find cures for these often overlooked illnesses.
