Pedal the Cause

I would like to share something from the heart.

I am part of a community that is directly affected by cancer. I unwillingly joined this community after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. In other words, I am one of those people to whom the gentle tag of "cancer survivor" is applied. I have been fortunate to have exceeded my expiration date. Sadly, many in this community have not. I grieve for friends who lost their battle - Mark, Linda, Kathy, Susan, Julia, Lori, Mac, my sister Roseann just to name a few.

I’m “still kicking” because of Barnes Hospital/Siteman Cancer Center. A skilled Barnes surgeon performed extremely difficult surgery to remove my diseased pancreas (plus a whole lot of other stuff!). Later, after cancer returned, Barnes accepted me in two clinical trials, where experimental drugs stymied tumor growth and extended my life. 

I support Pedal the Cause for two reasons: to show appreciation to the Barnes doctors and health professionals whose loving care has sustained me; and to fund the research that could lead to the cure for cancer. Fundraising this year is especially important because budgets for the US’s lead cancer research agencies were slashed $2 Billion a year.That means clinical trials that might have led to new drugs or therapies won't be able to take flight.

My friends, please join me in generously donating to Pedal the Cause. Barnes fights for me, for other cancer survivors, and for those who will hear the dreaded words, “You have cancer.”

My ride this year is in memory of Patti Roman and in honor of Mike Lee. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Patti passed away last year and Mike started his journey a few months ago.
