If you are like me, you probably have a love/hate relationship with social media. I threaten to turn off my accounts weekly it seems. One reason I don't, is our neighborhood Facebook group. It's useful for recommendations, information going on in the area, etc. Several months back, a community member posted a request for volunteers for a half marathon that would be running through our neighborhood and supporting the Sam Day Foundation. I had never heard of the foundation but I love running and was injured at the time, so definitley not able to participate. I looked at the volunteer positiions and I could volunteer by directing runners to the course, 5 houses away from my house. I mean, it doens't get much easier than that. So I sighed up to volunteer. Then I started looking at the organization. That's when I realized the amazing work this foundation does and the critical role they play supporting research and families of kids with cancer. I'm 50, I know plenty of adults with cancer, some currently battling, some who have won their battles and some who are no longer with us. To think of a child, who has so much to experience and learn in life, having to deal with such a complicated and cruel disease, breaks my heart. If I can help and participate in funding research to find cures or at least less invasive treatments, sign me up.
While I don't have kids of my own, I wouldn't wish a childhood cancer diagnosis on anyone. And I'm in process of returning to running, so let's partner together, I'll do the running and walking and we both do the donating. Thank you in advance!
