Eli was one of too many young people we have lost to gun violence over the years. Eli came to us through a gang prevention and intervention program. He was friendly, mischievous, and excited about life. He shared openly in our reflection times and often volunteered to lead prayer. Eli wanted to bring his family climbing so we set up a Family Adventure. He beamed with pride watching the girls climb. We offered Eli a job working with us for the summer. He would have been phenomenal.
In April 2022, Eli was shot in the head and died. He was 21 years old.
It's impossible to comprehend the plague of gun violence in this city. Yet, I believe that what we do at Chicago Adventure Therapy (CAT) makes a difference. Each time a young person is with us, they're not in their neighborhoods in danger. They can enjoy life, be inspired, try something new, and know that
they are valued human beings. By getting young people out of their neighborhoods and off the streets, we are removing folks from harm's way and introducing them to alternate pathways for their lives. We also provide free Family Adventures for families affected by gun violence, as a way to honor or memorialize those we have lost.
The best we can do is keep trying and count each day with youth like Eli as a gift. Thank you for supporting the Race Against Gun Violence and CAT. Thank you for caring about people like Eli! Your support keeps us going and truly makes a difference!
