June 2002 - I was a newlywed grad student working on my dissertation research. I had no idea my life was about to be totally altered by a doctor telling me a stubborn sore on my tongue was stage 3 oral cancer. The experience changed me forever. I learned I am stronger than I ever believed, that it is important to celebrate the little things in life, and that you should try to be a blessing to everyone you meet. I never thought I'd be surviving and thriving 19 years later........and am starting to count down to my big 20th Cancerversary next summer.
I am choosing to participate in STRIDES not only to support cancer research (you all know I did a post-doc in cancer research), but also as a way to keep myself healthy. I know all too well the importance of maintaining mental and physical health, and plan on walking a minimum of two miles every day in September. The ultimate goal is to do a 5K every day!
Funds raised through STRIDES will directly support the AACR Foundation's FIFTY for FIFTY campaign. This campaign honors the progress in cancer research over the last 50 years and is raising funds to support future breakthroughs.
The AACR brings together the greatest minds in cancer science and works side by side with scientists, clinical researchers, healthcare providers, policy makers, patients, advocates, and other key stakeholders to drive progress against cancer.
Your support of STRIDES will help propel the next wave of discoveries to benefit cancer patients and their families everywhere. Click here for more information on the work that is being supported by generous donors around the world.
