This memorial race is held in memory of Joe Mike Baker. Joe Mike lived and worked in the Sandy Bottom Community. He had many hobbies such as bowling, hunting, fishing and sports; however he fell in love with running. At the time of his accidental death in September, 2014, he was training for his first half marathon. As a tribute and to honor his memory, family and friends organized the JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run to raise money for scholarships for high school seniors who plan to use their education to give back to their community just as Joe Mike did. Through the efforts of the runners, sponsors and volunteers, we were able to award $4,500 in scholarships to seniors in South Lenoir High School’s Class of 2020.
This year’s JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run will be held at South Lenoir High School on Saturday, September 17th at 8:00am. Please make plans to come out and run, walk or volunteer and fellowship with us as we remember Joe Mike and the wonderful things he did for the southern Lenoir County area. Thank you in advance for your time and support of this amazing event. For more information check out our Facebook page at JMB Memorial 5K and Fun Run.
We will also be offering a virtual run option this year. Run anywhere between Sept 9-17. T-shirts will be shipped by September 26. Please contact via email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to participate in the virtual event but prefer not to run alone. We have members who will be glad to meet up and run with you in small groups to help motivate and cheer you on. Please use the RaceJoy app on Run the East Website to time your virtual run.
Awards presented to top male & female for each age group (13 & under, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+)
