Description

Welcome to the fifth annual Sparky's Turkey Trot!

Thanks to the tremendous support of our Dog Scout members, friends and family, Sparky's Turkey Trot is now an annual event. To celebrate our fifth annual Turkey Trot, we have TWO special events! You can choose to participate in either event. Or participate in BOTH for a discount.

  1.  Sparky's Turkey Trot
  2.  The FIVE Mile Gobbler

These are virtual races to fundraise for Dog Scouts of America, a national 501(c)3 non-profit. Anyone can participate in these fun events. This is great family and Scouting fun. You do not need to be a member of Dog Scouts, but your miles may be used for badges and titles.

Sparky's Turkey Trot is a virtual race that you can walk or run on your own time and you will receive a medal for supporting this great cause! Run or walk a 5K, 10K or 1 Miler and be rewarded with the Dog Scouts of America Sparky's Turkey Trot race medal. To earn your medal, please run anytime during the week of Thanksgiving and you will receive a medal "on your honor" for supporting Dog Scouts and getting some miles in.

The FIVE Mile Gobbler is a virtual five mile run or walk that you complete on your own time and you will be rewarded with a special Mile Gobbler PATCH to show off your hard work. To earn your patch, please complete your 5 miles anytime between Thanksgiving and Christmas and you will receive a patch "on your honor". There is no need to send in a mileage log.

Medals and patches will be mailed out after the race. The race organizer (a Dog Scout volunteer) typically receives the medals on Christmas Eve. The medals will be packed up and mailed after she receives them. All proceeds from these events will go to furthering the mission of Dog Scouts of America. During the setup of this race, we had to choose a location for the race to be based. The home base is the location of Michigan Dog Scout Camp, the happiest place on earth. But this race can be run from anywhere!

A virtual run is a fundraiser to bring people from all over the world to run together on their own time, in their own towns during the week of Thanksgiving.  You can run after work, on the weekend, at your park or on your treadmill. You can also walk!

We'd love to share a picture of you and your dog(s) and/or your team participating in this race, please email your pictures with relevant names, dog breeds, (troop affiliation and/or team name if applicable) and locations to our newsletter editor at thescoop@dogscouts.org

About Dog Scouts of America

Dog Scouts of America (DSA) was established in 1995. It is a non-profit organization with people dedicated to enriching their dog’s lives and the lives of others with dogs. Founder Lonnie Olson has made it her life’s ambition to experience as many dog sports and skills as possible with her dogs.

If you believe that dogs really enjoy learning new things and spending time with their owners, you’re our kind of dog per-son. Dogs were not meant to be "furniture." Working dogs want to work. Without having an acceptable activity in which to use up all of the energy that comes "built-in" with a dog, our canine companions often get into trouble.

By better understanding how your dog thinks, how he learns, and what drives his behavior, and by participating in a variety of dog sports and activities, you will become a more responsible dog owner.

We hope to prevent misunderstandings, communication failures, and behavioral problems which often lead to dogs being given up as a "lost cause."

Dog Scouts have the opportunity to earn many different badges and titles, especially for hiking and backpacking. If you want your dog's Turkey Trot miles to count, please download the appropriate log sheet for the badge/title you are working on. Your dog will also need to carry all of their own required survival gear. All of this information is available on our website, just click on Sparky! Then navigate to our titles or badge tabs.

Teams and Groups

Team Registrations: To save on shipping costs and pass along more $ to Dog Scouts - we highly encourage you to start a local team. You could organize a group for your DSA Troop, friends, church and/or family.  Create a team for your group to join or register everyone all at once. Teams should be formed based on geography/location, rather than which event you are participating in.

TO REGISTER AS A TEAM: Simply start a new Team when you register or join a team when you register. All the medals/patches for the team will be sent to the Team Captain. Registering your Team as a Group (all at once) is not a requirement.

Any Team Captain who assembles a Team with FOUR (4) or more members will receive a prize as a thank you for helping us save money on postage. All of your Team members don't have to participate in the same event or both events.

Group Registrations: You are encouraged to register multiple runners at a time -- for orders of 3 or more, the processing fees will go down. This saves YOU money.

TO REGISTER A GROUP:  Simply start by registering your name and information.  Click the blue "Add Another Registrant" button near the bottom of the first page.  As you check out, the order processing fees passed along from RunSignUp will be calculated based on your total order, not per person, and your fees will go down. Orders of three or more, your fees will go down. Having the medals shipped to one place is helpful, but not necessary. Thanks for participating!
