I’m walking and running Rocky’s Road in loving memory of my grandmother, Naomi “Rocky” Rock—the original pantsuit lady, a lifelong learner, and the dynamic woman who raised me.
After raising four children, my grandmother made the courageous decision to return to school as an adult. She earned her high school diploma in her 30s, and later her bachelor’s degree in social work—all while working, serving her church, and giving back to her community. Her courage and decision changed everything. Because of her perseverance, our family now includes generations of graduates—high school diplomas, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhDs.
Rocky never stopped moving. She worked as a Family Service Worker helping families become self-sufficient, led neighborhood watch efforts, organized community celebrations, volunteered tirelessly, line-danced across New Jersey, traveled the world, and stayed active well into her 90s. Even in her senior years, she encouraged everyone around her—especially young people—to go back to school and keep learning.
For the past eight years, I’ve had the privilege of working at Academy of Hope, supporting adult learners who are walking their own versions of Rocky’s Road every day. I see firsthand how adult education transforms families, strengthens communities, and opens doors that once felt out of reach.
I’m participating in this 5K to honor my grandmother’s life and to raise funds so more adults have the opportunity to rewrite their stories—just as she did. Whether you join me by walking, running, or making a donation, you are helping carry her legacy forward.
Thank you for taking this journey with me—one step at a time.
