January 2021, Valarie received the news that no one wants to hear. She discovered she had stage IV Ovarian Cancer and BRCA1 + but she was determined she was going to fight as long and as hard as her body would allow. She fought with grace, determination and strength. She never complained and always smiled. Due to her BRCA1 gene she inherited, she was adamant that her children be tested so that they have the knowledge to save their lives, save their childrens lives and future grandchildren.
Sadly on July 24th, just a couple of days after leaving a family vacation at the lake that she looked forward to, she was placed on hospice. Less than 48 hours later, she passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband, parents, siblings and children. She wanted to continue the fight but her body could not continue. She will always be remembered a strong, beautiful woman with a fight that just does not quit.
Since Valarie's diagnosis, she has participated in the Teal Diva organization where we raise our voices against ovarian and other gynecologic cancers in the Lowcountry by donating to the 1st annual Stronger Together 5k. This 5k is extra special this year as it not only raises awareness for ovarian cancer but also to encourage women with a history to get tested for the BRCA gene, both which she had.
In 2024, it is estimated that over 22,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and over 14,000 will die as a result of the disease. By making a donation in support of my team, you help provide quality of life programming, community advocacy, and survivorship programs to cancer patients in our community all which Valarie appreciated.
This event provides a way for us to honor and remember Valarie. Make a gift to my team or join me on race day and know that you are making a difference to cancer patients right here in the Lowcountry.
Through raising our voices, we keep Valarie alive. Let's keep saving lives in honor of Valarie.
