Our Story

Jess and Eleanor are first cousins. Despite their age difference they share something very big in common. They both have Hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a lifelong condition with no cure. It is the buildup of fluid in the cavities deep within the brain. The extra fluid puts pressure on the brain and can cause brain damage. The condition is typically treated with shunt surgery. There is a lack of advancement in treatment that has left many people unable to live full and productive lives.

The Alo/ DeJulio families have supported the Pediatric Hydrocephalus Foundation for many years. The organization is a locally-founded charity that is dedicated to raising awareness, supporting affected families and engaging state and federal policymakers to advance research and support in the fight against this incurable brain condition.

Jess was born with Spina bifida, Chiari Malformation and she acquired Hydrocephalus at 3 days old due to the Spina bifida when they closed her spine. Her first shunt was placed at 5 days old and since then she has underwent a total of 59 surgeries. Most of them being Hydrocephalus related brain surgeries due to shunt failure, shunt infections and her body trying to reject the shunt.

Eleanor was born prematurely at 24 weeks. She acquired hydrocephalus due to a hemorrhage in the ventricles of her brain as a result of her prematurity. She has had 2 shunt surgeries at 1 month old and again at 3 months old. She has been very lucky so far on her journey but she will likely have multiple brain surgeries in her life.
