Terry's Bio

Terry has been competing in multisport events for about a dozen years now.  It’s a true passion of his, and he wants to explore all aspects of the production of race events.  Terry decided to get more involved in the sport and join the Racine MultiSports team, he said, “The races in which I have participated and observed that have been put on by Racine MultiSports or in which Racine has had a significant role in supporting have been among the most impressive I have experienced.  I have great respect for the organization, and I’m proud to join the team”.

Terry joins the team as an Assistant Timer but says he will also help out with whatever else he can! Terry wants to learn about all aspects of producing endurance sports of all types.  He is excited to be able to play a part in ensuring that the athlete experience is as good as it can possibly be.

Terry has a Ph.D. in theatre history, theory, and literature, and a master’s degree in philosophy. He has worked most of his career in higher education as a professor and administrator and is currently an Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences at Shippensburg University.

Being a competitive athlete his entire life, Terry grew up in Iowa in a family with 5 siblings in which cycling was a big part of their lives. Their yearly family vacation was RAGBRAI, the annual week-long bike tour across the state of Iowa each July!  He first rode it when he was 12.  When he was a teenager, his parents bought a bicycle shop that his Dad operated for 25 years; Terry worked at the shop, selling and wrenching, throughout high school and college.  He started running road races when he was a young teen, and competed in cross country in high school.  However, his biggest sport when he was young was tennis. He played NCAA Div. I tennis in college for Bradley University.

Terry started running marathons about 17 years ago, and began focusing more on triathlons 12 years ago, competing in distances ranging from sprint to half-iron.  Terry still continues with road cycling, riding tours and grand fondos and most years rides the Seattle to Portland double-century with his older brother. He sasy swimming is his weakest discipline as a triathlete, but he keeps working on it.

Terry has two daughters, Tylor (age 15) and Michaela (age 17) who are both envloved in multisports. They enjoy training and competing in races together.  Terry says, ” I feel so lucky that my two teenage daughters love doing the same things that I love, and that they don’t think they are too cool to hang out with Dad”.

Favorite Racine MultiSports race and why?
Luray.  I’ve done both the Sprint and the Olympic, and in 2017 completed the Hawksbill double.  The venue is beautiful, the course is just challenging enough, and it is always produced so well.  It’s really the closest race to where I live in Harrisonburg, so it’s like our hometown race.  I feel lucky that our hometown race is one of the best out there.  Luray is also special because my youngest daughter Tylor (13) has competed in the Sprint race twice.  She’s done some other Racine events as well, but we love Luray.
