Space Coast Runners

Merritt Island, FL 32954 US

Space Coast Runners has a rich history of running all over Brevard County. Over the past 43 years we've grown from an idea on a cocktail napkin to one, if not the largest, running clubs in Florida. We're proud of SCR's history and very much look forward to its future.

  • 1978: Space Coast Runners was founded.
  • 1983: The first Runner of the Year Series was held. It kicked off in January.
  • 1984: The club's executive board made the decision to add a Board of Directors to govern the club and its decision making.
  • 1989: First running of the club's new race, Eye of the Dragon 10K on January 15, 1989. Overall male was David Smith (32:18) and overall female was Nancy Huy (41:58).
  • 1991: At the suggestion of board member, Marty Winkel the club presented its first Golden Shoe Award. The award was given to Gary Harbison. The club intended to present the award annually.

ABOUT THE AWARD

Beyond the finish line, there are those individuals who dedicate their time to make our running community thrive. The Golden Shoe award is intended to acknowledge these selfless contributors who uplift and enrich the lives of runners. The first annual Space Coast Runners Club "Golden Shoe" award was presented at the May 19, 1991 Awards Banquet. The idea for this award was proposed by member, Marty Winkel as a spin off of an award he saw in Runners World Magazine.  Nominations are put forth by  SCR members each Spring with the award presented at the club’s annual Celebration Night.

SCR Hall of Fame

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Space Coast Runners Hall of Fame was inaugurated in 2001 to honor legendary local figures in the sport of running who have made SCR and the Space Coast Runners “Runner of the Year Series” what they are today. These outstanding athletes and individuals have most certainly left an indelible mark on the club.

Each Spring SCR gathers nominations from its membership for Hall of Fame selection. The intent is to honor a Space Coast Runners member’s athletic accomplishments as a runner, as well as in the SCR ROY Series, and/or their contributions, leadership or efforts on behalf of the Space Coast Runners Club.
