January 7, 2021

Greetings, NYD5K participants!

Right now the weather for Friday looks grim, with heavy rains (over an inch of rain predicted) and cold temps in the mid 30’s. We need a full day for Friday’s soaking rains to drain off the race course (and also out of the parking area), so we had hoped to postpone the event to this Sunday. But right now more heavy rain is predicted for Sunday morning, so, after careful consideration and several conversations with our local running meteorologist, we have made the tough but, what we think is the right decision to move the race to NEXT Saturday January 9 (with a rain date of Sunday January 10).

*Now that we’ve moved the date of the event (Saturday January 9) we are also changing the actual reserved starting times to begin an hour earlier. Please check your time slot in Participant Tracking. If you need to switch your time, go to your Runsignup profile, click on Manage Registration, then go to "Time Slot" in the top right navigation to see if there are any openings. *We ask that WALKERS sign up for the earlier times (before 9:00 if possible), if it’s not too inconvenient, so our volunteers have a shorter day. If you have any issues, contact charlottesvilletrackclub@gmail.com.

We are very sorry about this and are disappointed at not being able to hold this special event on the actual holiday weekend but we are still really looking forward to hosting you for this year’s special edition of one of the CTC’s most popular events. Thanks so much for being so flexible, patient and understanding as we continue to strive to bring you a truly safe and enjoyable experience. We are grateful for your support and we are also very grateful to our friends at Foxfield for their generosity in once again opening their beautiful venue to us.

And any of you who are supporting the event VIRTUALLY, may do so at any time over the next week at the course of your choice.

To our Foxfield in person guests, we ask that you CAREFULLY read the following instructions, as they will help to enhance your race day experience and will assure that you and all of our volunteers are safe throughout the event. Thanks!

Happy Racing and we will look forward to seeing you next Saturday!

Deb, Leah, Audrey and Mark

FOXFIELD RACE COURSE
Space for the Foxfield Course is limited to the first 250 entrants. Most likely the event will fill up prior to race day.  If the in-person event is canceled due to any snow on the field, all registrants will be transferred to the virtual event.

Masks are required at all times with the exception of when you're actually out running or walking the 5K course. All volunteers will be masked as well.

We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the ongoing hospitality and generosity of the new Foxfield Board of Directors, we will be hosting, a course totally on a finely manicured grass path around the scenic, rolling perimeter of this magnificent property! And because we anticipate that many of you will want to walk or run this exciting and beautiful historic new course, we have set up “time slots” for your walking or running safety and convenience.

Each Foxfield time slot will be limited to 10 openings due to Virginia and Albemarle county COVID-19 safety guidelines. Note that each slot will NOT start together as one single wave. It will be a rolling start so as to keep everyone as physically distanced and safe as possible. You just have to begin your race within 5 minutes after your starting time.

Details on all of our safety protocols for this new Foxfield version will be emailed to you the week of the race. And worried about getting your feet wet? Then bring a dry pair of shoes and socks for the drive home. Let’s have some fun!

VIRTUAL OPTION AVAILABLE!
Run your 5K anywhere between 12/30/2020 and 1/9/2021.

THERE ARE NO REFUNDS OR DEFERRALS. NO strollers or dogs will be allowed on the race course.

PACKET PICKUP:

Jan. 3-8 (9:00-5:00pm) at Ragged Mountain Running & Walking Shop, 3 Elliewood Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22903

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Greetings, NYD5K participants!

Right now the weather for Friday looks grim, with heavy rains (over an inch of rain predicted) and cold temps in the mid 30’s. We need a full day for Friday’s soaking rains to drain off the race course (and also out of the parking area), so we had hoped to postpone the event to this Sunday.

*Now that we’ve moved the date of the event (Saturday January 9) we are also changing the actual reserved starting times to begin an hour earlier. Please go to your Runsignup page to see your assignment and switch the time if there are any openings.

*Please arrive at Foxfield next SATURDAY morning, 15 minutes before your reserved time, so as to start your race at or before your designated time. So, for example, if your reserved time is 8:45 please arrive by 8:30 and try to start your race, at the latest, by 8:45. This staggered protocol is to assure that we abide by the County code to not have more than 10 participants at any given time heading to the starting area.

*Due to the pandemic protocols, only volunteers and registered participants are permitted on the property. Sorry, no spectators.

*Your race number must be pinned (in all four corners) to the outside layer of your front, so as to properly trigger your chip. If you have multiple members of your family running, please make sure that you each wear the correct number (your names are on the back of each number)

*You MUST wear a mask from the time you get out of your vehicle, including on your warmup,  until you cross the starting line. You may take your mask off while running the course but as soon as you cross the finish line, we ask that you immediately wear your mask again. In other words, masks must be worn at ALL times except while racing out on the 5K course. This is for the safety of our medical team, our volunteers and for you, our guests. Thanks!

*We will have a designated warm up area (on the infield...see map) for those of you who wish to get in a short pre race warmup. We ask that you NOT warm up on the actual race course or out on Garth Road. You MUST wear your mask while warming up.  And no post race cooling down on the property or along Garth Road, as we need for folks to leave as soon as possible after completing your race. We apologize for any inconvenience these pandemic rules may bring.

*The first mile is all on grass and is the fastest mile of the course, with a gentle but steady descent. So, take advantage of the terrain by going out a bit faster than you normally would at the start of a race. The second mile is the toughest one, as it features a gradual uphill from 1.2-1.5 and another gradual uphill from 1.7 to the 2 mile mark. So, slow down your pace for the second mile. The second mile is also on grass until you get to 1.7, where it turns into a gravel road. The third mile is mostly pretty flat with a mix of gravel and grass, so, after you pass the 2 mile mark you can begin to really pick up the pace . Spikes and trail shoes are highly recommended but not required.  See the course map for details.

*We are thrilled to have chip timing for this year’s event, thanks to our friends at Blue Ridge Timing, so we will have overall and age group results. We will not post the results until the last finisher has completed the event. Age groups are as follows: 10 & younger, 11-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+.

Also, the NYD5K is the first event in our 2021 RACEFEST series, where we will be keeping track of your individual points you accumulate at each event in the series. 5 points will be awarded each time you complete an event. You may accumulate more points based on your age group finish (3 points for 1st in your age group, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd). Top 3 overall placers will also be awarded points. There are 8 races in the series, starting with the NYD5K. Visit cvilletrackclub.org to sign up.

*We will have portajohns at the race site for your convenience.

*Dr. Wilder, our wonderful longtime Race Medical Director, will be on hand, along with his Runner’s Clinic crew. We are grateful for their ongoing volunteer help. We also appreciate the help of our CTC volunteers, who will be helping to safely guide you throughout your race experience.

*We will have your official NYD5K high quality masks ready for you at Foxfield on race day. If you are participating virtually you may pick up your mask AFTER January 9.

*On behalf of the Charlottesville Track Club and thanks to your generosity, all proceeds will be donated to our neighbors at PACEM and to our friends at Foxfield.
