On North Haven, people often look up when they hear the sound of a helicopter worrying that someone is having to be taken off island in an emergency. There is also comfort in knowing this service is available.
The challenge of swimming three miles, at least three-times longer than I normally swim, symbolizes the challenge of providing lifesaving emergency medical care to Maine's island and rural communities. LifeFlight of Maine is a nonprofit organization and the state’s only emergency medical helicopter service. It has three helicopters, an airplane and ground ambulances, all with ICU-level care aboard.
