The Sarcoma Stomp

September 24th marked a pivotal moment in Annie's life when she received her diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer. About a year ago, Annie noticed her left shoulder blade protruding, which she attributed to the physical demands of pregnancy, childbirth, and caring for her daughter, Sophia. Last March 2024, an orthopedic x-ray initially cleared her concerns, but nine months later, a massage therapist while on a family vacation to Captiva in Florida questioned the mass on her shoulder blade and urged her to seek a second opinion.

After four months of doctor visits in Charlotte & Boston, consultations, tests, emotional turmoil, prayers, and a bit of denial, Annie was diagnosed. It was not the news she could have ever imagined, especially as she was just settling into her role as a new mother. Nevertheless, she resolved to fight this battle for Sophia, her family, her friends, and her future.

Annie is currently undergoing fourteen cycles of chemotherapy at Levine Cancer Institute, supported by an exceptional team of doctors and nurses. In January 2025, she underwent a partial scapulectomy at Boston Children’s Hospital (supported by her team of doctors from Dana Farber), successfully removing her tumor, in a procedure they deemed successful. She now has 7 cycles of chemo left to go, and remains extremely hopeful she’ll be fully cured by this summer.

Throughout her journey, Annie's mission has remained steadfast: to fight and conquer this disease. She has also developed a passion for raising awareness and instilling hope in others facing similar challenges. Due to its rarity, the treatment for Ewing Sarcoma has remained largely unchanged for the past ~20-30 years, with Annie's treatment plan mirroring those from the 1990’s. This stagnation is due to limited funding and research, which she’s hoping to change.
