The Athens Fire and Rescue Department is dedicated to the service of our residents, local businesses, and visitors. The department consists of 53 certified firefighters, most of which are also licensed EMTs, 2 fire prevention personnel, and an administrative assistant.
These certified firefighters work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure that the city of Athens has constant fire services protection. The fire department covers the entire city limits which is over 40 square miles with a population of approximately 32,000.The department has 3 stations strategically placed to give the most efficient response possible. Through continual training and hard work the fire department maintains an ISO Class 2 rating. The fire department responds to any fire related emergency, serious medical emergency, motor vehicle crashes, HAZMAT incidents (county wide), and various other calls for assistance as needed.
