My journey began with a heartwarming tale of love and my passion for working with children with special needs. I firmly believe that God had a special plan for me when he blessed me with my cousin, Edward Micheal Freer. From a young age, I knew he was unique. Our family faced daily challenges in supporting him, and at times, things seemed overwhelming. But then, when he was almost six, a lightbulb went off. He was diagnosed with autism. While the diagnosis was scary, I was also amazed by all the incredible things he accomplished and overcame as he grew up. He was incredibly bright. His brain worked differently from mine, and even though he may never fully understand the impact he had on me, I will forever be grateful for the irreplaceable life experiences that helped me become the strong, independent, and caring adult I am today.
It was because of him that I chose to pursue a career in occupational therapy, working in pediatrics for 14 years. From there I have found my current passion to be working at an amazing school in south Austin called “Let It Shine” where I am a lead teacher. To say I am happy and blessed is an understatement. My students and families of all abilities are amazing. I will be forever grateful for all the lives I am blessed to be apart of.
I will end the story with this. While there are many things I don’t know, I do know this. I will spend my life dedicated to helping others break the chains of normal so that they can live fulfilled lives. Disabilities remind us of the bare basics, where being kind, helpful, patient, and loving are the most important attributes. People fear what they do not understand. Understanding is the key to acceptance; it’s about understanding that everyone is different and some people need extra help, extra time, extra attention, and a little extra love!
