From the inception of Life;Story in Illinois, this event has always been important to me...and not just because I was one of the original event leads in planning and organizing the event, but because of the meaning of the event. One life lost to suicide is one too many. I have lost people that I loved to suicide. And to know that suicide is the leading cause of death for kids as young as 10 absolutely breaks my heart. We have to do more...we have to do better to protect our children.
As I went out into the community to talk with prospective donors/participants for the event, I left almost every meeting in tears because that person had been affected by suicide.
And then 2 years ago, it became really personal for me. Jack started having thoughts of suicide. Immediately I contacted Centerstone and he was getting help with a couple of days. It wasn't a quick turnaround because I'm an employee and received special treatment. It was immediate because he was in crisis and that is what Centerstone does.
His counselor works with him on a regular basis to talk about healthy options when feeling anxious or having thoughts. When he is at a higher risk for suicide, his treatment plan increases immediately. No wait list to be seen on a weekly basis for 6-8 weeks. And when he is doing well, it goes back to not as frequent appointments. She truly works with Jack to ensure he is getting the care he needs in a timely manner.
This year, Jack wanted to create a team and he picked the name "Resiliant Rockstars." Jack has been my biggest advocate since starting this event with trying to get everyone he knows to come out and run/walk.
