Dismas House of Massachusetts, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) agency devoted to its mission of reconciling returning citizens from prison to our communities. To fulfill this mission, Dismas House manages a network of housing and social services that provide an integrated and unique approach to ensure the success of homeless former prisoners in the Greater Worcester, MA area, a community comprising the second largest cohort of low-income clients in the six-state region of New England. The Dismas model provides a safety net and social network for former prisoners through:
- Housing stabilization at a variety of transitional and permanent housing locations – Dismas House, Brooks House, Dismas Family Farm, a new permanent housing annex at the Farm, and scattered site apartments
- Clinical and case management support – MSW and licensed social worker support for individuals at all sites
- Farm vocational programming – a full time general contractor and a Farm steward train farm residents in a variety of skills for job placement
- Full legal support – through the BAR None program, residents, families, and returning citizens throughout greater Worcester receive direct representation from a legal team on disability, family issues, back taxes, credit, stolen identity, drivers license and other issues
- Aftercare – residents continue to receive legal, clinical, and case management support as needed after graduation from programs
- Family resources – family reunification supports, from legal, to case management and housing are provided for family units
- Community Organizing – The Returning Citizens Initiative of Worcester is led by a community organizer and this group works on advocacy issues for better public policy for returning citizens
