The origin of the Horse & Hound Inn long predates the American Revolutionary War.   While 1749 provides the earliest known record of the house as an inn, it was build as a homestead prior to this date. It served as a mason schoolhouse, a gin and rum mill, and also a state coach stop on the Old Post Road from New York City to Danbury. The adjoining building served as a blacksmith shop for servicing guests, horses and travelers along the Post Road.

Since early times, the quiet charm of south Salem has changed little. As a landmark in the community, the Inn retains its peaceful atmosphere. In keeping with the tradition, your hosts Susan and Silvano Vales have tried to maintain the Inn's natural beauty. We hope you enjoy your visit with us.
