Description

Join us in the 2020 Sea Otter Global Virtual Event - Sea Otter Play.  You'll share in state-of-the-art virtual experiences including the always show-stopping Sea Otter Play Festival, the opportunity to support non-profits across the globe, give your motivation a boost with shopping for Sea Otter Play custom gear - and of course Challenge your fitness!!

Sea Otter Play includes Challenges for the activity of your choice -  that can be completed outdoors on the road, trail or indoors on your trainer!!  Choose your special favorite or two. Virtually ride, run, walk or hike an iconic Sea Otter Europe course in Girona, Spain or along the rolling coast of Big Sur, or take on the Australian route or maybe Canada? Participants choose their route and exercise activity, and track their Challenge activities from September 1 through September 16.  Loading up results for Challenge activities earns Rewards Points for great swag, and populates the leader boards for global bragging rights. Challenge Registration opens August 14th, 2020 at 9 am PST.   The Digital Festival will be ready to tour on September 17, 2020.

CHALLENGE RULES and FAQs

CHALLENGE ETHICS

Safety. Abide by the rules-of-the-road/trail if you are completing any Challenge outdoors. Share the road/trail. Keep your speed in check. Your safety is YOUR responsibility. Challenges are NOT RACES. Use good judgement, do not take risks that would stress your local medical care facility. Abide by your local health and safety rules for social/physical distancing. If in doubt, complete the challenge indoors!
Be Responsible. If you are challenging yourself outdoors, abide by all local laws, and traffic rules. Prepare accordingly. Carry ample food, hydration, and maintenance supplies and have an emergency plan in place.
Honesty. This is a fun event to challenge each other and do good. Just follow the rules and be honest as you execute your challenge. We are aware and monitor leader boards – and we'd hate to have to exercise our right to flag/disqualify activities.
Follow local Guidelines. Adhere to the most current rules and regulations in your particular part of the world pertaining to social distancing, stay-at-home ordinances and travel policies.
Respect all participants and the public. Participate as friends and part of the endurance sport community.

The Challenge miles must be logged between 8 am PST September 1 and midnight PST on September 16.

Can I complete any of the ride Challenges on any style bicycle?

Will there be prizes for the top Challenge finishers?
No, BUT Challenge participants will earn Rewards Points that can be redeemed for fabulous prizes provided by the event's partners.

What's stopping someone from cheating as they log their activity results?
We do have a number of ways that we can detect cheaters, however we do realize that no matter what we do, or how we structure, people will be able to cheat if that’s what they want to do. E.g. Put their Fitbit on their dog!  We're all in this together with the honor system!

How do I access the Challenge once I've signed up?
Information and details can be found on the Sea Otter Play web pages.  Registration and results postings are powered by www.runsignup.com.   When you register for a Challenge you will create a RunSignup profile from which you can log in and access the Sea Otter Play Challenges, add to your activity results, and load up your photos.

RESULTS

SUBMITTING RESULTS
Sea Otter Play Challenge results are different than physical race results in many ways.  Results are available but posting is optional. No awards – however you only earn Rewards Points if you post your daily activities -- so everyone is encouraged to post their activities.

When you complete your entry you will receive a confirmation email.  This will include a BIB number - remember this detail!  Print out a custom 'race' bib from your profile  with this number to wear as you complete your activity - and use it as your ID for logging your results.

Once registered, you will receive an email, separate from your confirmation, that contains a direct link to post your results.  These instructions describe the several ways to log your Challenge activities to the RunSignup.postings.

And - for convenience, for lots of activity types, RunSignup supports the ability for participants to submit virtual results manually, or by uploading their GPS activity recorded while using third party types of tracking tools.  (Two very common formats of data are GPX and FIT, which services like Garmin and Strava use to store activity data.)  Personalized data will automatically fill in, including the Distance, Date, Elevation Gain, and Time fields from the activity file being submitted.  More details here - https://runsignup.blog/2020/06/24/raceday-virtual-results-now-supports-personal-gps-activity-submission/

AND - all activity progress results can always be manually posted.
