The Gaffka 2023

The Gaffka's are in town! Let's celebrate by running up Lazy Mountain.  This trail race will start at the trailhead for Lazy Mountain.  Runners will go up the Lazy Moose side (approx 2.8 miles), then it's another mile to the summit.  Crossing the ridge to the flag is OPTIONAL. Runners will then go down the Lazy Mountain trail to return to the trailhead for a total of approximately 5.8 miles.  This is a low budget race - there will be some water at the trailhead but otherwise racers will be self-reliant.  In effort to have less waste, please bring a reusable race cup or water bottle to fill.  Additionally, please be mindful of trash during the run if you plan to utilize gels or other running foods.  We will keep time in a rudimentary fashion (think stop-watch and bib numbers). Otherwise, the plan is to have fun and race up and down the mountain!  Please be honest in terms of following the moose trail and not taking any shortcuts; however, if you wind up sliding down the lazy mountain side in the muddy spots, no worries!

The view from the top is beautiful and there are plenty of spots that offer amazing views of the Valley.  This is an Alaska mountain trail race in the summer.  Please plan for any possible weather (rain, mud, wind).  The trail is steep in places and there is always the risk of slides and falls.  Animals are always a possibility (moose, bears, ptarmigan).  The trail is minimally maintained in places.  We will do our best to keep it marked but otherwise it's a well followed trail.

The parking area at the trailhead is small and requires either an annual pass or a $5 daily parking fee.  There is a restroom in the parking area.
