ABOUT THE ARC OF SHELBY COUNTY

The Arc of Shelby County serves over 1,400 children, adults and families in Shelby County. Through advocacy, coaching, and support, we empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to achieve their goals.

The Arc of Shelby County's Children's Program serves over 450 children between the ages of birth and three years in Shelby County through early intervention services. The Children's Program provides free evaluations to families, as well as free trainings to community daycares and child care centers. The Lending Library loans out equipment, adapted toys, technology and other resources to parent for use at home or in their daycare setting. The Children's Program also presents Tales for Tots, a community outreach and literacy program open to children and families from our Early Intervention program and from the general community.

The Arc of Shelby County's Employment Program assists adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in achieving their employment goals by working with each individual to provide training and support to help them obtain and maintain employment and ensure success. The Arc of Shelby County also currently provides long-term support services for over 100 participants at no cost to them, helping to ensure success for the life of their job. Pre-Employment Transition services are provided to hundreds of high school students throughout Shelby County. The employment team also hosts REACT events, which provide opportunities for participants to gather for social time and educational instruction.

The New Visions Day Program opened in Calera in 2021 and provides opportunities for ongoing skills training and for community-based inclusion to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. New Visions program participants receive the training and support they need to continue to improve their personal, social, communication, self-help, and independent living skills. A variety of activities are provided to New Visions participants, including community leisure and recreational outings, community-based learning opportunities, and volunteer opportunities.

The Arc of Shelby County also provides a variety of trainings, resources, and referral information to help support individuals and families as they achieve their goals. To learn more about The Arc of Shelby County visit www.thearcofshelby.org.
