Our Purpose
Our mission is to provide aid, support and comfort to cancer patients and their families. Venecia found inspiration to make a greater and lasting impact after reading an article shared by a friend. She began packing Care Bags for cancer patients, each filled with useful items that had helped her throughout her own cancer treatments. In her mind, these bags serve as a substitute for her not being there to hold a cancer patient’s hand. Venecia’s Foundation, a grassroots nonprofit organization situated in Piedmont, Alabama, was officially established on July 25, 2013, and obtained its 501(c)3 designation on June 3, 2014. Despite Venecia’s passing in 2015, her legacy lives on as the Foundation continues to fulfill her vision of aiding, supporting and comforting cancer patients.
The Care Bags are designed to assist patients undergoing cancer treatment who may not be familiar with what to bring for their lengthy sessions. Packed with personal care items selected by Venecia based on her firsthand experience, these bags have evolved over time through feedback from cancer patients. While the individual items may not be extravagant, collectively they offer a meaningful gesture of support, reminding cancer patients that they are not alone. The bags include various items such as a soft blanket, lotion, eye drops, gas card, chapstick, journal, puzzle book, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, travel pillow, port pillow, sugar-free candy, tissues, face masks, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, non-slip socks, and in honor of Venecia, $10 Starbucks cards. These items aim to provide comfort and a sense of care to cancer patients during their challenging journey. The goal is to distribute a minimum of 350 Care Bags annually.
Recognizing the transportation challenges faced by radiation patients, Venecia’s Foundation introduced the Gas Card Program to provide additional support. Radiation treatment often requires daily travel of over an hour for a month or longer, imposing financial strain on patients. By offering gas cards, the foundation seeks to alleviate some of the transportation burdens these patients face. In memory of Venecia, $10 Starbucks cards are also included to offer a small treat to these individuals. The foundation aims to distribute gas cards worth at least $15,000 annually to assist radiation patients in their journey towards recovery.
Venecia's spirit of laughter and resilience in tough times lives on through every Care Bag and Gas Card, spreading joy to cancer fighters and planting seeds of hope in their hearts.
