Description

Join us at Ben Geren Park for a special 5K and Fun Run benefiting Emma, a young girl living with Rett syndrome—a rare neurological disorder that affects about 1 in 10,000 individuals and hinders physical and cognitive development. Despite the daily challenges she faces, Emma’s strength and sweet spirit inspire everyone around her. This event aims to raise funds to help her family purchase a wheelchair-accessible van, offering Emma greater mobility and independence.

The event features a timed 5K for competitive runners and a relaxed fun run for families and participants of all ages. Whether you choose to run, walk, or roll, everyone is welcome to show their support. Enjoy music, refreshments, and opportunities to learn more about Rett syndrome and Emma’s journey. Every step taken at Ben Geren Park brings Emma closer to the van she needs—and a better quality of life.

About Rett

Rett syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation occurring on the twenty-third chromosome and affecting the production of the MECP-2 protein, a protein critical in meeting developmental milestones. The disease, which primarily affects girls, results in a wide spectrum of symptoms and severities which often include inability to walk or speak, seizures, repetitive hand movements, and difficulty sleeping. Rett syndrome is a lifelong affliction which currently has few treatments. Doctors often recommend a rigorous cadence of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Recent research has identified the gene causing Rett syndrome and has proven that its effects can be reversed. In 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Daybue (trofinetide), a drug intended to replace the MECP-2 protein to halt or reverse the effects of Rett. While not a cure, this was a tremendous leap forward. Gene therapy is a major area of research in the Rett community, with many companies beginning clinical trials in 2024.
